The 27-year-old Taylor Meyer from Southern California lost his life during an alleged robbery gone wrong in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.

Meyer was on vacation with friends, and former schoolmates and the group was preparing for the friend's 30th birthday party.

Meyers and the group arrived in Playa Del Carmen on Wednesday. Just two days later, his body was found at the Lazaro Cardenas Park.

His parents were devasted when authorities called them in California with the news, and his father said they don't wish this on any other family.

His mother later explained to reporters: "This was a random act of violence. They stole his shoes and his wallet."

Rumors are doing the rounds that it was "a tourist-on-tourist crime" and that Meyer was not killed by a local.

His parents are worried that all of the misinformation being spread means that they'll never learn "the true story about all these unanswered questions."

One of those questions is how Meyer ended up in the park where his body was found. His parents have since asked the FBI to oversee the case.

They fear the investigation officers are covering up information to not loose tourist interest in the area.

According to the State Department, the area is classified as "level 2," and visitors are urged to "exercise increased caution." The report continues:

“While most of these homicides appeared to be targeted, criminal organization assassinations, turf battles between criminal groups have resulted in violent crime in areas frequented by U.S. citizens. Shooting incidents injuring or killing bystanders have occurred.”

A candlelit vigil was held for Meyer on Sunday at the Hermosa Beach pier, even though his body remains in Mexico.

Another case that made headlines earlier this year was the death of Command Sgt. Maj. Timothy A. Bolyard from West Virginia.

According to the statement, the 42-year-old soldier died from "small arms fire in Logar Province," when he was shot by a member of the Afghan National Police.

The case is still being investigated. Read the full account here.
