2-year-old girl dies after her caregiver whipped her for wetting herself

On Saturday at around 1:28 a.m. the Arlington police responded to a call about a child who was not breathing. When they arrived at the scene they transported the child to the hospital.

Unfortunately, the 2-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the hospital. Further investigation found that the caregiver had been physically abusing the toddler.

Shamonica Page, 34, admitted to repeatedly hitting Aniyah Darnell, 2, with a belt and burning her buttocks as punishment for wetting herself. Darnell was pronounced dead at Medical City Arlington, Texas.

The police were called to the Las Lomas Apartments on Saturday morning after the caller the toddler wasn’t breathing. When the police arrived they found her lifeless body.

Page was taken into custody after admitted that she’d repeatedly struck the child because she had become frustrated with her soiling her clothes. The caregiver said she wanted to “teach her a lesson,” according to a police affidavit.

The suspect also told investigators that she hadn't gone for medical help for the weeks' old severe burn on the child's backside. Instead, she chose to use “home remedies.”

Despite the toddler being injured Page continued striking her as punishment with her hand or a belt. She told the police that she had been caring for Darnell since August.

According to Page, the toddler’s biological mother was unable to care for her daughter. It’s unclear what the relationship is between the suspect and the child.

Page was charged with first-degree felony injury to a child. Dereck Roberson, 38, was also arrested as he was present during the commission of the crime.

He was booked into jail on a count of injury to a child by omission, a third-degree felony. The pair could face upgraded charges depending on the outcome of Darnell’s autopsy.

Two other children were found in the apartment and they’ve been placed in the custody of the Texas Child Protective Services.

In Limestone County, Amanda Reyer, 25, been sentenced to 40 years in prison for putting her two young children in scalding water as a punishment for breaking the bed. Witnesses at her sentencing hearing described the horrific injuries her son, then-5, and daughter, then-2, suffered on June 14, 2015.

At the time, Reyer had intentionally put them in the tub of hot water in their Limestone County mobile home. She pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated child abuse.
