In 2013, Barbosa realized she was getting out of breath when she climbed the stairs. Her muscles were beginning to give out on her.
Barbosa feared that eventually, she would need someone to take care of her. And that's not what she wanted for herself despite the common expectation.
She said:
"My concern is with this old age that is coming because I do not want anyone to have to carry me. I do not want to give work to anyone."
Not wanting to be a burden, Barbosa headed to her local gym, Academia Expressão Saúde. Since then, she hasn't looked back.
Barbosa explained:
"What I want is to stand up and be independent and that's my motivation."
The grandmother now goes to the gym at least three times a week. She described her philosophy of putting in the work to be able to rest.
Barbosa has also delved into other activities like rock climbing. Her gym's Instagram account regularly share clips of the grandmother so as to motivate and inspire others.
Based on the comment sections, it is definitely working. Barbosa constantly receives support and praise for her exceptional determination.
Another grandmother is proving to the world that age is nothing but a number. Janice Lorraine is a 75-year-old bodybuilder who doesn't look to be slowing down.
The competitive bodybuilder says her "aim is not to rival those younger than [her]. Her aim is to show what's possible and to motivate and encourage women of any age..."
Lorraine now has 23 championship titles she won over the last 20 years. In addition to giving others hope, Lorraine shared her diet as being "nude food."
It consists of food prepared without condiments, and which are unprocessed. Grilled chicken, grilled fish, and eye fillet steak, accompanied by salads and sweet potato are a common meal.
Both these women prove it's never too old to start getting into shape so as to enjoy life as long as possible. Other suggestions are to inculcate stretching into your daily exercise.
Additionally, it's good to note that exercising doesn't have to be going to the gym every day. Simple things such as walking your dog, opting to take the steps, taking short walks, and going over to your co-workers' cubicles or offices instead of emailing can also be practiced.
Whatever steps you take, be consistent and build on it a little bit over time. Before you know it, you'll be feeling like you're on top of the world as these women appear to be.
