The criminal believed that she could kill Selena and make it look like an assault, but the wounded Selena managed to drag herself to the front desk where she named Yolanda as the shooter.

Selena's father did an investigation when he was contacted by several fans who claimed that they paid the subscription fee to her fan club, but hadn't received anything in return.

Her father, Quintanilla Jr., realized that Yolanda had been stealing money by forging cheques. She was acting manager of the fan club and boutiques at that time and had embezzled close to $200,000.

Quintanilla had previously warned Selena that Yolanda was incapable of doing her job and that she needed to be wary of her. Selena, on the other hand, wanted to save her friendship with Yolanda and did not heed her father's advice.

Selena's father confronted Yolanda and said that she needed to provide proof dismissing his accusation of theft or he would be forced to involve the local police department.

Selena tried to reason with Yolanda and asked her to return all the statements and company documents. Frightened at the prospect of going to jail, Yolanda withdrew a gun from her bag.

Selena realized what was happening and tried to run away, but Yolanda shot her in the back. The bullet entered near her shoulder blade and severed the right subclavian artery. Selena was rushed to the hospital but was announced dead on arrival.

Yolanda tried to flee the scene, but the agents who responded to the hotel's emergency call saw her leaving in a pickup truck. Cornered, she surrendered after a nine-hour standoff

Yolanda was sentenced to life in prison on the charge of murder in the first degree. She is currently serving her sentence at the Mountain View Unit in Gatesville, Texas, and will only be eligible for parole in 2025.
