The Alabama shooting took place around 2 a.m. when a plainclothes officer approached the suspects. They appeared to be attempting to break into some vehicles.

After confronting the suspects, the officers received fire. Sergeant Wytasha Carter, 44, was present in uniform when he was fired upon.

According to AP, The officers were part of a special detail group that arose from a series of break-ins in the area. One officer noticed that someone was checking door handles on vehicles.

That officer called for backup and Carter responded. The officers then searched the suspects and found a weapon.

Birmingham Police Chief Patrick Smith told what happened next:

“The officers approached one suspect and patted him down where they found what they believed to be a weapon. They asked him about it, he armed himself and fired upon our officers.”

He continued:

“It appears our officers were unable to respond. They were taken completely by surprise. We can’t go into great detail because we are still in the infancy stage of the investigation.”

Carter went to Belford University where he finished with an arts degree. He was in the US Air Force at one point.

He then worked in law enforcement since 2002. He began as a correctional officer in the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.

From there, he passed through two police departments before reaching the Birmingham department. He had been a sergeant since February 2018.

On Sunday, a mortuary transport van transferred the body to the coroner's office. Police cruisers and Carter's colleagues were there to pay their respects.

Carter's will also be remembered by his wife and two children. His dedication to family and work will not be forgotten.

Officer Jordan Campbell said:

"Every time I found myself getting into a dangerous situation, I'd look up and he was always there."

Smith spoke about the effect of the incident:

“This is one of the roughest hours of your career. There’s not a chief, not an officer that ever wants to have to deal with this. This is a very difficult thing for the family, very difficult for the department.”

The other officer was also injured and remains in the hospital. Smith said he is "not out of the woods."

He added:

"For me as Chief of Police, it's very difficult for me to look both of their families in the eye and explain to them the tragedy that we have had to endure and -- for one of them -- that their loved one will not be coming back. Sgt. Carter's family has endured a lot. In a matter of moments, everything they knew as true and their expectation of tomorrow has changed."

One suspect was admitted into UAB Hospital while another is in custody. The suspects are said to be 18 years of age.

Meanwhile, the Davis Police Department in California recently received a letter from a man who allegedly killed one of their men.

Kevin Douglas Limbaugh, 48, killed himself with a firearm over the weekend. He then left a letter for the police to find.

Limbaugh is believed to have killed rookie officer Natalie Corona. But in the letter, he addresses "ultra sonic waves" which he claims the department is hitting him with.

He said he "notified the press, internal affairs and even the FBI about it." Then he stated he could no longer "live this way."

On Christmas Eve 2018, another officer sadly lost her life. Detective Deidre “Dee Dee” Mengedoht, 32, was a Kentucky detective doing a traffic stop.

She was struck by an alleged drunk driver of a semi-truck as she sat in her cruiser. Louisville Metro Police charged the driver, Roger Burdette, 60, with murder.

Police found that Burdette took multiple prescription drugs before the incident. He "made no attempt to avoid collision with the police vehicle" according to the police chief Steve Conrad.

Our hearts go out to the families of those whose loved ones have died in the line of duty.
