Willie Nelson and George Strait bewitched fans, singing together for the first time
Two of the greatest legends in the Texas country music scene made history when they shared the stage for the first time to perform an unreleased song in a beautiful duet in the “Music City,” delighting the privileged crowd.
The joint appearance took place on January 12 during the “Willie: Life and Songs of An American Outlaw” concert at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, and luckily it was captured on video and shared to YouTube.
As the almost four-hour-long show that was part of a commemorative tour celebrating 85-year-old Willie Nelson’s musical legacy, the singer was joined by his colleague and fellow Texan, 66-year-old George Strait to perform a world premiere.
“Sing One With Willie” is the name of the song Nelson and Strait debuted. It was written by the two legendary musicians along with Strait’s son Bubba. Read more on our Twitter account @amomama_usa
A LONG LIST OF COLLABORATORS
The song lyrics reference Nelson’s impressive list of collaborators, with Strait lamenting that it took him so long to act alongside one of the most recognized artists in country music.
"Now I’ve heard him with Merle [Haggard], Waylon [Jennings] and [Johnny] Cash/[George] Jones and Toby [Keith], that man is totally gracious. I’m thinking ‘Damn, why not me?’/We can even sing it on TV/Just like him and ol’ Julio Iglesias," Strait sings.
The tribute show was produced by the A&E network and Strait is far from being the only superstar who appeared at the event to pay their respects to the “Red-headed Stranger.”
Kris Kristofferson, Alison Krauss, Lee Ann Womack, Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell, Margo Price, Bobby Bare, Emmylou Harris, and others were also part of the special, which will be aired in the future.
Nelson’s son Lukas surprised everybody back in 2013 when he joined Red Young and Friends to sing one of his father’s songs on stage while on a cruise.
A CELL PHONE VIDEO
But for all of us who weren’t lucky enough to witness this remarkable duet and couldn’t wait for the performance to make it to the TV, there is a cell phone video taken by a member of the audience that gives us an idea of how it was.
The low-quality fan-made video doesn’t do justice to the magical moment, but nevertheless, it has been viewed more than 46.000 times in less than a week, and many country music lovers have left positive comments on the duet.
“Doesn’t get much better than this!” wrote user Barbara Cervantes, while Ruby Presley commented, “2 of my favorite country singers together, wow.”
WHAT ARE THEY UP TO?
Some fans shared their hopes for the brand new song to be part of Strait’s upcoming album “Honky Tonk Time Machine,” which first single “Código,” also co-written by his son, was released in December.
Nelson, on the other hand, released his last album to date back in September. Titled “My Way,” the recording revisits country music standards.
Strait’s son wasn’t the only one who inherited at least some of his father’s talents, becoming a skilled songwriter.

DIFFERENT LIFE STORIES
Nelson was raised by his grandparents, who both had a musical education, and at a very early age, the future singer was involved in performing, with his first show consisting in him reciting a poem when he was only 5.
By the time he turned 7, Nelson had already written his first song. He was first signed by a recording company as a songwriter when he was just 13 years old.
Strait was raised by his father alone, in a family with no particular music background. It wasn’t until his college years that the “King of Country” did his first shows.
He went on to become the record holder of the largest indoor concert ever, packing more than 100.000 fans in the AT&T Stadium in 2014.
