9\11 survivor tragically dies in terrorist attack on his 41st birthday
Jason Spindler was among those killed in a Tuesday terrorist attack on a Kenyan hotel.
According to Mirror, Spindler would have celebrated his 41st birthday next week. Instead, he is among the 21 dead after the horrific incident.
The ordeal took place in Nairobi's DustiD2 compound and lasted for hours. Spindler was having lunch at the time he was killed.
The businessman helped developing countries through investments and consultancy services. He had his own firm which he was CEO and managing director of.
I-DEV International is based in Kenya. The company reportedly deals in management strategy and investment. Spindler had been working in the field since he lived in the United States.
During 9/11, Spindler was an analyst and employed within Building 7. He barely escaped with his life when the building succumbed to the plane strike's debris from the North Tower.
Spindler's brother Jonathan confirmed the death to the Daily Mail.
He said:
"It's with a heavy heart that I announce that my brother, Jason, passed away this morning during a terror attack in Nairobi. Jason was a survivor of 9/11 and a fighter. I am sure he gave them hell."
He added:
"There are no words to describe how our family is feeling but I can say... Jason Spindler, you are and always will be an amazing son, brother and uncle. Rest in peace - we will miss you dearly."
Spindler did not have a wife or children to survive his death. However, his mother also shared her grief over her son's death.
Sarah Sandler said:
"We all miss him so much. And it's so sad that such a bright young person is taken away by terrorism."
Spindler's friend Chris Shroeder also spoke about his loss:
"Jason Spindler was one of those rare men who was loved by pretty much anyone be touched in Kenya and around the world. He chose a life of hope and inclusion. I am grateful to have known and learned from him."
Spindler, who also worked for the Peace Corps after 9/11, received farewell words from the State Department.
A spokesperson said:
"We can confirm that a U.S. citizen was killed in the attack. We offer our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of this individual."
In 2003, Spindler worked in management services. By 2005, he was in Peru as a Peace Corps worker. He was an avid traveler throughout his life.
Spindler graduated from NYU Law as well as the University of Texas. He had won grants from the Bill and Melinda Gate and the Clinton Foundation. In 2007, he started his company.
A British man and charity worker, Luke Potter, also died in the attacked. He has one surviving child.
Police and emergency respondents transported at least 30 injured individuals to the hospital. In total, around 700 people had to be evacuated from the complex.
The terrorists began the attack by detonating car bombs just outside a nearby bank. Officials said that, after 20 hours, the five attackers were all "eliminated."
The attack is reminiscent of the Thousand Oaks shooting which took place in California in November 2018. Among the dead was a Las Vegas shooting survivor.
Telemachus Orfanos escaped death back in October while 58 others died. But it was only to have his life stolen in his own home town just over a month later.
Orfanos, 27, died along with 11 others after a gunman walked into the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks. His distraught mother called for gun control after the loss.
Other Las Vegas survivors were present and survived the attack. The shooter, Ian David Long, was later found dead inside the bar. He had a history of exchange with the police before the attack and his death.
