Lara Trump let her privilege show in a recent interview when she said furloughed workers must endure "a little bit of pain."

Her statement caused severe backlash online as citizens from all walks of life reprimanded President Donald Trump's daughter-in-law.

Joy Behar and Meghan McCain from "The View" likened Lara to Marie Antionette, who famously said about the poor: "Let them eat cake."

Lara has since taken a break from sharing selfies to express her outrage. She said on Twitter that "[Fake news] is alive and well."

She added the hashtag "Don't Believe The Hype," as well as an American Flag emoji for good measure.

In her statement, Lara asked her followers to not "believe [mainstream media] who overreact without research and didn't bother to watch [her] whole interview."

She claims that her words are being misrepresented and that she really does support furloughed workers. "My heart goes out to them," she added.

Lara also said that if the "Democrats really cared about these employees [...], they'd meed with [President Donald Trump now."

Several netizens pointed out that her words cannot be "misrepresented" if she said it live on television for all to see.

A user known only as Rachel said: "You said what you said. The only thing that's fake is the Trump clan. If [President Turmp] really cares about the country that he is supposed to serve and the government workers he'd himself and get over this wall."

Lara, who also serves as President Trump's re-election campaign adviser, said in an interview with Bold TV that the pain "will be worth it." She explained:

“Listen, it’s not fair to you, and we all get this, but this is so much bigger than any one person. It’s a little bit of pain, but it’s going to be for the future of our country.”

Many pointed out that Lara is "a rich, privileged, out-of-touch socialite who can’t understand what it’s like to not be able to pay a mortgage, a child’s college tuition or health care costs."
