Princess Kate Returns to BAFTA After Years Away – One Detail Has Everyone Talking
February 23, 2026

Baby Louis's full royal title is His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge. However, he only has the title because the Queen stepped in and altered the rules.
In 1917, George V made a decision that HRH titles ought to be limited. According to his rules, just the monarch, their children, grandchildren and the Prince of Wales's first grandson could have official titles.
The Queen issued a Letters Patent, a legitimate system by which the sovereign can give orders without the association of Parliament regarding the matter.
THE QUEEN STEPPED IN
We would have had only a Prince George under those rules, but Charlotte and baby Louis would have had different titles.
Charlotte would most likely have been Lady Charlotte Mountbatten-Windsor and Louis would have been Lord Louis Mountbatten-Windsor.
On the off chance that Prince William and Kate Middleton's first child was a girl, she wouldn't have been a princess at all.
However, Her Majesty stepped in to guarantee her great-grandchild had titles appropriate for a future ruler before George was born.
The Queen issued a Letters Patent, a legitimate system by which the sovereign can give orders without the association of Parliament regarding the matter.
Published in the London Gazette, the note stated:
"The Queen has been pleased by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 31 December 2012 to declare that all the children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales should have and enjoy the style, title and attribute of royal highness with the titular dignity of Prince or Princess prefixed to their Christian names or with such other titles of honour."
The declaration was made on Kate's 31st birthday when she was pregnant with Prince Geroge in 2013. This new rule implies all of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's kids will be princes and princesses.
THANK YOU CARDS
Recently, William and Kate expressed gratitude toward their dedicated fans by sending them a beautiful family photo, along with a heartfelt message.
Their thank you card featured one of Prince Louis's christening portraits taken this past July.
The message read:
"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis thank you for your very kind Christmas message. Their Royal Highnesses send you their very best wishes for Christmas and for the New Year."
