Barack and Michelle Obama have, through the years, given us real relationship goals. Open and candid about their love and support of each other, they have made sure that their relationship and family life trumps any political issue they face in their public life.

Obama was recently a speaker with his buddy, NBA star Steph Curry, at the MBK Alliance in Oakland California, a conference funded by the Obama Foundation. Their mission was to empower the participants, made up mostly of African-American youth, educators, and group leaders, to find success through knowing what it truly means to ‘be a man.’

The friends discussed the relevant social pressures that men face today. They touched on racism, inequality, and feeling ‘less-than’ or ‘weak’ which often leads to overdoing the male stereotype act. It is often, Obama said, that men “feel we have to compensate by exaggerating stereotypical ways men are supposed to act. And that’s a trap.”

He continued by explaining the need to redefine the meaning of success. Too often, success measured by money and fame results in a false sense of confidence. He went as far as analyzing the impact of hip-hop and rap music on sending the wrong message, saying,

“I will tell you, at the end of the day, the thing that will give you confidence is not that. I know a lot of rich people that are all messed up.”

He lightened the mood and the message with a little humor when he said,

“If you were very confident about your sexuality, you don’t have to have eight women around you twerking… you seem stressed that you gotta be acting that way.”

The audience applauded when he gushed about Michelle saying,

“Cause I’ve got one woman who I’m very happy with. And she’s a strong woman.”

It’s no secret that he credits his success to his wife. After 27 years of marriage, he continues to send her love messages on his social media, often giving her high praise and credit for her achievements. He was quoted after his first State of the Union Address saying, “If you were going to list the 100 most popular things that I have done as president, being married to Michelle Obama is number one."

The former first lady has lived up to every compliment made by her husband. Her most recent success is her memoir, “Becoming,” which sold 1.4 million copies in its first week, according to the Hollywood Reporter. It was released on November 13 and is the best-selling book of 2018.
