Michelle Obama Wishes Happy Birthday to Virginia Mclaurin Who's Celebrating 110th Birthday
Michelle and Barack Obama tweeted birthday messages for 110-year-old Virginia McLaurin. Their former White House guest danced with the couple during her 2016 visit, a photo of which the Obamas shared in their tributes.
Michelle Obama paid tribute to D.C’s favorite centenarian Virginia McLaurin who celebrated her 110th birthday yesterday. “Grandma Virginia” as she’s fondly called famously visited Michelle and her husband in the White House in 2016.
“Still dancing at 110 years,” the former first lady wrote in her recent greeting sharing a photo of Virginia’s memorable visit three years ago. Virginia danced with the Obamas at the time. The photo Michelle shared along with her message relived that moment.
Barack also took the time to greet her on her special day when he tweeted the same photo with the message, “What a great moment. Happy 110th Virginia.”
Virginia visited the Blue room on February 2016 in time for Black History Month, Michelle told her then that she wanted to be like her “when I grow up.” The centenarian assured her “you can.”
She also expressed her disbelief stepping into the White House. “I thought I would never live to get in the White House, and I tell you I am so happy,” she told the presidential couple. Luckily for her, her extended years allowed her the opportunity.
Prior to her visit, she launched a social media campaign to meet the famous couple. When she finally did, she declared, “I can die smiling now.”
Virginia’s birthdays always come with fanfare. When she turned 107, she celebrated with her favorite basketball team, the Harlem Globetrotters. She’s been spending her birthdays with them since then.
This year, she intends to celebrate with her friends and family at TGI Fridays and with one wish in mind.
"For my birthday, I wish I could meet the Mayor (Muriel Bowser). She adopted a girl, and I adopted a boy."
While someone associated with the Obamas is celebrating a happy birthday, Michelle’s tennis trainer is currently being accused of racketeering.
Gordon Ernst who personally trained Michelle and her daughters Malia and Sasha has been linked to a series of briberies while he was a tennis coach in Georgetown. According to reports, he earned more than $2.7 million for admitting students to his tennis team on paper without requiring them to actually train and play. He allegedly conspired with the scheme’s mastermind, college counselor William Singer.
Ernst was fired from Georgetown in 2018 and moved to University of Rhode Island which placed him on administrative leave since the disturbing news broke.
