Having said that, Lucas seemed to be very aware of what has become of the film’s characters in the nearly two decades since we last knew about them.

“The proposal that Andy Tennant, the director, had, which is quite interesting, is that my character is back in Alabama and Reese’s actually, her character, is in New York with our kids and we’re divorced,” Lucas dropped.

He also shared that “Patrick Dempsey’s character’s [Lucas’ character’s rival] still in the picture,” although insisting about the entire thing being just a proposal.

In the original film, Witherspoon plays Melanie, who is in the process of getting a divorce from her estranged husband Jake, played by Lucas. Melanie is engaged to Dempsey’s character Andrew, a politician from New York City.

In the end, Jake manages to win Melanie back, but if the storyline for the sequel is made into a film, it will mean that things became complicated between the two once again, which poses the question of whether Jake if they are going to reconcile one more time.
