Carrie Underwood Wins 20th CMT Award and Continues Her Historical Run
On Wednesday night, the annual the CMT Music Awards were held at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Country singer Carrie Underwood continued her winning streak!
Carrie Underwood, 36, won her 20th CMT Music Award continuing her reign as the most decorated act in the history of the event. Fans voted for Underwood to win two awards.
She won one for video of the year for “Cry Pretty” and another for female video of the year for “Love Wins.” Overwhelmed by the continued support she receives from her fans she thanked them by acknowledging their efforts.
The musician said:
“Fans, thank you so much. I saw you guys doing the Twitter parties and getting together and doing your thing and voting. None of us would be able to do any of what we do if not for you guys. You guys put us here. You guys keep us going. You guys let us live out our dreams.”
In her acceptance speech for her first televised award of the night, she revealed that the day was extra special. Underwood shared that it was her husband’s birthday.
As the former hockey player, Mike Fisher, 39, sat in the audience, Underwood shared: “It is my husband’s birthday today — look what they got you. Thank you so much. God bless you guys. Thank you, CMT. Thank you.” Backstage after the show, the musician spoke to “Entertainment Tonight’s” Nancy O'Dell.
When asked about her historic winning streak she responded: "It's crazy!" Underwood further stated: "My husband was like, 'Oh my gosh, your fans like to vote,' and I was like, 'Well, that's how I'm here in the first place. They've been voting for me since day one. Since I was on American Idol. So they know the drill."
She continued:
"I constantly have people telling me they voted for me on Idol, and that was 14 years ago. So now there's people that are like, 'Ever since I was a little kid, I would vote for you.'"
Underwood joked:
"I'm like, 'Oh my gosh, have I been doing this for that long?' But it's just really cool that they're still supporting me after all these years."
Besides winning during the event, the singer also had the chance to perform. She was one of the artists chosen to honor the year’s best country music videos and she sang her song “Southbound.”
The event was started off by Thomas Rhett, Little Big Town, and Trombone singing “Don’t Threaten Me With a Good Time.” Brett Young sang “Here Tonight” with Boyz II Men and they even included the RnB group’s song “Water Runs Dry.”
Sheryl Crow and Maren Morris also performed together. Tanya Tucker sang “Delta Dawn” with Martina McBride, Trisha Yearwood, Lauren Alaina, and others.
The awards were hosted for the second year by Little Big Town.
Underwood and Fisher got married in 2010. A source revealed last month that the couple “balance each other out” and “Carrie tells her friends how lucky she is.”
They are parents to sons Isaiah, 4, and Jacob, 4 months.
