It was on the set of 1985’s “Volunteers” that Hanks and Wilson met.

“Rita and I just looked at each other and — kaboing — that was that,” the actor recalled. “I asked Rita if it was the real thing for her, and it just couldn’t be denied.”

Hanks was previously married to Samantha Lewes, with whom he has two children.

After their divorce, Hanks began dating Wilson. Speaking about his first marriage, Hanks said:

“I was 23 and my son Colin was already 2 when I married for the first time. I was not really ready to take on those responsibilities.”

At the Hollywood premiere of “Dragnet” in 1987, Hanks and Wilson were seen holding onto each other. They exchanged marriage vows the following year, in the month of April.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Hanks shared:

“The success of our relationship was a matter of timing, maturity and our willingness to have an intimate connection.

"When I married Rita, I thought, ‘This is going to require some change on my part.’ I won’t deny that Providence was part of us finding each other, but our relationship isn’t magic — the way it’s shown in movies. In real life, our connection is as concrete as me sitting here.”

He added, “Not that marriage doesn’t come close to being hell in a handbasket sometimes. But we both know that no matter what, we’ll be with each other — and we’ll get through it.”

In the years after their marriage, Hanks and Wilson would be seen side by side during public events. In 1992, the actress was right by his side when Hanks received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

They would also continue to share the big screen, playing onscreen best friends in 1993’s “Sleepless in Seattle.

OVERCOMING CANCER TOGETHER

When Wilson was diagnosed with cancer, Hanks was there for her until she beat the disease. She recently recalled the time she had a “serious discussion” with her husband following the diagnosis.

She told Tom that if anything happened to her, and she died, that she wanted him to be super sad for a very long time and also wanted a party and celebration.

Wilson wrote on Instagram, “Four years ago when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I had so many different thoughts. You’re scared, anxious, you think about your own mortality.

"So I had a serious discussion with my husband that if anything happens, I wanted him to be super sad for a very long time and I’d also like a party, a celebration.”

From the looks of it, this couple will have more blissful years ahead of them.
