In an interview with the New York Times, the popular host opened up about his experience of being a meteorologist.

"We know weather is one of the main reasons people tune in to the news, so I try to do my best to be accurate. Then I hope for the best."

EARLY LIFE

Born and raised in Queens, New York, Roker graduated from Manhattan’s Xavier High School.

Luckily, his parents believed in the power of education so they did everything they could to make sure that their children are educated despite belonging to a blue-collar family.

Roker discovered that he had a talent for meteorology when attended the State University of New York at Oswego.

Eventually, he landed a part-time job at WTVH-TV in Syracuse as a weekend weather-caster at the station. He was promoted to weekday weather-caster by the time he got his bachelor’s degree.

In 1985, Roker earned the New York magazine’s “Best Weatherman” award.

MARRIAGE AND KIDS

Roker met his current wife, Debroah Roberts, in 1990 after Roberts joined NBC as a reporter. In an interview with People, she revealed how they first hit it off.

"Al was so sweet. He showed me pictures of his daughter and talked about his family. I just thought he was a nice guy, and that was that."

After that, Roberts was transferred to Miami and then to Atlanta but she kept in touch with Roker.

Roberts came back to New York in 1992 and at the time, Roker had just split up with his wife, Alice.

Roker and Roberts shared a romantic relationship for two years, and in 1994, Roker popped the question to Roberts on the rim of the Grand Canyon.

Since Roker had a daughter, Courtney, from his previous marriage, Roberts initially found it hard to live in peace with her. Revealing how it was like to People, Roberts said:

"There were times when we were the dueling girls. Sometimes I was feeling, 'Why is Courtney getting her way? I want my way.' And Courtney was doing the same thing. It's not a piece of cake, but it's a lot better than it was. Courtney and I have both matured."

The couple’s first child, Leila was born in 1998 through in vitro fertilization. As a working woman, Roberts had a hard time balancing her career and personal life after the birth of her daughter.

In an episode of Today Show, Roberts opened up about the career changes that followed after her daughter came into the world.

"When we had Leila, it became a difficult point in our marriage because I was already working mornings, and ABC came to her and said, 'We'd like you to do the newsperson's job on Good Morning America. Deborah decided to step back. Her career suffered some for it. You always feel guilty about that.”

The couple welcomed their son, Nick, in 2002. Unlike their daughter, Nick has special needs.

Although the couple couldn’t have been more different, their marriage is still going strong.
