Mary J. Blige to Star in 'Power' Spinoff 'Power Book II: Ghost'
Mary J. Blige says her inclusion as the lead star of the new "Power" spinoff is "the most exciting thing" to happen to her this year. Show executive producer 50 Cent reveals why Blige was the perfect choice for the part.
Mary J. Blige is redefining what power means as she takes on a new challenge on television. The singer is set to star as the lead character of the “Power” spinoff “Power Book II: Ghost.”
BLIGE BRINGS HER POWER TO NEW SERIES
“This is probably the most exciting thing that’s going to happen to me this year,” Blige said during a surprise appearance at the Television Critics Association summer press tour last week when “Power” producer Courtney Kemp announced the new show.
Blige joined Kemp on stage and thanked the producer and 50 Cent for reeling her in, saying she’d been a fan of the Starz series since it first started six seasons ago.
"I’ve known so many Tashas, I’ve known so many Ghosts. I’ve dated so many Ghosts. I’m a huge fan for life, and I’m so grateful to be a part of it.”
It was revealed in May that the 50-Cent-executive produced show is on its final season this year. But now fans don’t need to feel so bad with the spinoff in the works.
According to Variety, Kemp announced during the press tour that the new show which will be the first in a series of spinoffs “will continue the journey of some of Power’s most controversial characters.”
Blige is thrilled to be heading the cast revealing she can relate to the storyline. “I’ve known so many Tashas, I’ve known so many Ghosts. I’ve dated so many Ghosts. I’m a huge fan for life, and I’m so grateful to be a part of it.”
50 Cent likewise shared that Blige was the most suitable pick for the role which required a woman “who’s got enough juice and grace to make the show even bigger.”
IT'S BEEN A POWERFUL YEAR SO FAR
What better choice than the 48-year-old music legend whose year has proven to be a stellar one. She was honored with BET’s Lifetime Achievement Award in June, the same month she inked a TV deal with Lionsgate for the production of a television series under her production company, Blue Butterfly Productions.
She currently stars in Netflix’s “The Umbrella Academy” while entertaining fans across the country through her ongoing “Royalty Tour” with Nas.
SHE'S PROVEN HOW POWERFULLY SHE CAN CLAP BACK
But along with her success comes occasional setbacks. Blige recently proved she’s not one to back down from fans who attempt to dampen her day.
During her recent show in Nashville as part of her tour, she clapped back at a fan who asked her to shut up. In retaliation, the singer responded on stage by telling the fan to shut up instead.
SHE DERIVES POWER FROM WITHIN
Blige has no room in her life to welcome negativity what with her newfound love for self after her bitter divorce with Kendu Isaacs. The singer admitted she’s now “content” and “happy with myself” following a 10-year-marriage that went south.
Blige is keeping a positive mindset lately along with staying fit. Just check out her 48th birthday bikini photos that are a testament to her healthy lifestyle.
With this kind of disposition, she will do wonders for her role in her new series and no doubt, give it power the way only she can.
