NeNe Leakes Reveals She Was on Medication to Treat Depression While Husband Gregg Fought Cancer
NeNe Leakes reveals she suffered from depression during the time her husband was fighting cancer, having to take medication for it.
NeNe Leakes granted Hollywood Life with an exclusive interview, opening up about her battle with depression during the time she had to take care of her husband, Gregg, who battled stage 3 colon cancer from June 2018 until being put in remission in May 2019.
Taking Care of her Husband
Taking care of Gregg became NeNe's full-time job, hindering her from doing what she usually does. The effect of this was wearing her down that she was mentally having a hard time coping with such a drastic change in her life.
“Being a care taker and doing something like caring for someone with cancer for the first time in my life, then to have to be the bread winner for everything, it’s a lot. The overseer of everything in our life, it was a lot of pressure and it really did feel like depression,” she shared.
Seeking Help On-Time
Instead of sulking, NeNe took matters into her own hands by learning about why she wasn't feeling quite NeNe anymore. She set up an appointment with her doctors to talk about the situation. The first person she talked to about it was her OBGYN, who said she might be going through depression.
According to NeNe, she wasn't sure what that felt like so she read about it to learn about the things she was feeling.
“And so I started reading about it and learned things about myself that I saw in me. She gave me some medication and it really worked and it helped me out a lot. I don’t think I really understood how serious that was for us and how much pressure I had on me.”
Life on Remission
Now, Gregg and NeNe are doing a lot better. In fact, it's been four months since he completed his 6-month rounds of chemotherapy, which ultimately led to his recovery.
While he's had to fight cancer since 2018, NeNe only opened up about it early this year. Since then, their journey was shown on "The Real Housewives of Atlanta," where NeNe would air out her frustrations.
However, now that Gregg is officially in remission, he and NeNe celebrated with the hardworking staff of the hospital he was in.
Since then, they have tried to live their best lives, making every moment count.
