Witherspoon’s first son, JD, took to Twitter not long after news broke of the legend’s death and wrote:

"So...my Dad died today & honestly I’m not sure how to feel. I’m sad, but I’m also happy 4 all the great times we had together. We’d roast each other like homies more than Father & Son, and I really liked that. He was my best friend & my idol. Love U Dad...I’ll miss u."

Alongside the tear-jerking note, JD shared four photos with his late dad, all of which proved that the two indeed shared a close bond. One of the snapshots was a throwback of Witherspoon holding an infant JD and making a funny face.

"Much love, JD," actor Damon Wayans Jr. wrote while another fan chimed in: "Deepest condolences to you and you're family, you're (sic) father was a great man and will be missed by many. Take all the time you need."

JD is a popular YouTube creator who seems to have inherited his father’s funny side; many videos exist of the duo goofing around and just being hilarious.

Witherspoon passed away at 77 on October 29 at his Los Angeles home. No cause of death has been released, per The Guardian. A statement provided to Deadline by Witherspoon’s family read:

"It is with deepest sorrow that we can confirm our beloved husband and father, John Witherspoon, one of the hardest working men in show business, died today at his home in Sherman Oaks at the age of 77. He is survived by his wife Angela, and his sons JD, Alexander, and a large family."

"We are all in shock, please give us a minute for a moment in privacy, and we will celebrate his life and his work together," the family added. "John used to say ‘I’m no big deal,’ but he was huge deal to us."

Celebrities like Regina King and Ice Cube have been paying tribute to the memory of one of Hollywood’s respected actors and comedians who brought laughter to many for over four decades.
