Dressed in a gray sweater and skinny jeans, Oprah Winfrey held up her book club pick, which is the controversial novel by Jeanine Cummins, "American Dirt." The author has received harsh backlash for her polarizing portrayal of Mexican immigrants and their struggles.

ENDORSING A CONTROVERSIAL BOOK

Despite the criticism that the book has received, as it was written by a non-immigrant from an immigrant's perspective, it was still endorsed by Oprah as it humanizes the strict migration process that the US has put in place.

“What touched me is, by the end of the story — not even by the end — I immediately was drawn into the story and their desire to get into the United States. Every night on the news, you see the stories at the border. I thought this humanized that migration process in a way that nothing else I’d ever felt or seen had.”

THE STORY OF "AMERICAN DIRT"

The novel follows Lydia and her son Luca, as they escape from Acapulco, Mexico after a drug cartel murders their family members. While many praised the book for its tale, some slammed it as an act of cultural appropriation.

"American Dirt" will be featured on an episode of Apple TV+ series "Oprah's Book Club," where Winfrey and Cummins will travel to the border to discuss the work intensively.

"This story really changed me and changed the way I see what it means to be an immigrant trying to come to this country."

A CONSTANT FIGURE IN OPRAH'S LIFE
