Many of the athletes who were supposed to participate at the Tokyo Olympics have come out to state their disappointment while also accepting that it is a necessary sacrifice, given the coronavirus outbreak.
United States gymnast Simon Biles is one of the athletes who was slated to compete in the now-suspended Olympic games. While making an appearance on the Today show from her home, Biles said she was heartbroken that she won't be competing at the games this summer.
Biles revealed that she was at the gym, training when she got a text message with the news of the postponement by the International Olympic Committee. She said,
"I didn't really know what to feel. I just kind of sat there. I cried, but ultimately it was the right decision. We need to make sure everyone in the U.S. and around the world is healthy and safe."
The IOC and the Japanese organizers have explained that the new date will give all parties enough time to deal with the pandemic. Meanwhile, Simon Biles reaffirmed that she would be physically ready for the games in2021, but admitted that the postponement would take its toll mentally.
