Anderson Cooper's Late Mom Gloria Vanderbilt Knew Her Son Was Having a Baby
On Thursday, April 30, 2020, Anderson Cooper welcomed his first child via surrogate. This week, the CNN anchor revealed that he’d spoken to his mother about having a child before she passed away.
Cooper, 52, appeared recently on “Live with Kelly and Ryan” where he spoke remotely about his newborn son, Wyatt Morgan Cooper. He revealed to Ryan Seacrest and Kelly Ripa that his mother had known before her death that he was interested in having a child.
The “Anderson Cooper 360” host’s mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, passed away at the age of 95 in June 2019. The CNN anchor shared with Seacrest, 45, and Ripa, 49:
“I was able to tell her [Vanderbilt] shortly before she died that I was going to have a baby.”

VANDERBILT WANTED COOPER TO HAVE KIDS
In 2016, Cooper and Vanderbilt attended the premiere of their HBO documentary, “Nothing Left Unsaid.” While being interviewed, Vanderbilt said that "of course" she wanted Cooper to have children.
I had the idea in my head
She added at the time: "I just hope I'm still alive.” During Monday’s interview, Cooper said: “[My son], Wyatt, hadn’t been created, was not a being at that point, but I had the idea in my head. I was in the process.”
ANDERSON’S ANNOUNCEMENT
In his Instagram announcement, Cooper shared photos of him cradling the little boy. The New York native captioned his post sharing that Wyatt was only three days old at the time.
The newborn baby’s first name was Cooper’s father’s name. The journalist’s father passed away when he was only 10.
THE BOY’S MIDDLE NAME
The little boy’s middle name came from Cooper’s mother’s side of the family. He explained in his post that he knew his parents liked the name because he found a list of names they’d written down when they were deciding what to name him.
ANDERSON STARES AT HIS SON
Speaking to the show hosts this week, the Emmy Award winner confessed that he couldn’t stop staring at his son. Cooper admitted that hours would go by with him looking at baby Wyatt.
COOPER IS BACK WITH EX
According to “Us Weekly,” the star will be parenting with his ex-boyfriend Benjamin Maisani. The publication confirmed last Friday that the former couple had gotten back together before Cooper welcomed Wyatt.
ANDERSON CONGRATULATED
Several celebrities reached out to the star to congratulate him on the birth of his son. Andy Cohen, Karlie Kloss, Derek Blasberg, and Chris Cuomo all congratulated Cooper.
