Even though she has enjoyed several wins, including walking home with the crown during the third season of “American Idol” in 2004, Fantasia Barrino was once a 19-year-old single mother whose life had little or no meaning.

According to Nicki Swift, the singer’s rough patch with life began when she was raped by a boy she had a crush on while she was in high school. Although the boy got some punishment for the pain he inflicted on her, Fantasia wasn’t satisfied by the outcome.

The singer claimed that the one thing that kept her going was her faith in God and her love for her husband, Kendall Taylor, whom she married in 2015.

It didn’t take long before she eventually dropped out of school at 14, as the difficulty of going back every day became too much for her to handle. During an interview with Oprah, Fantasia stated that soon after she dropped out, she rented an apartment ― one that the boy she was dating at the time, later moved into.

By the time she turned 17, she was pregnant, jobless, and had no real support system to hold her together. Since then, Fantasia has been in more abusive relationships than she can count and even overdosed on aspirin because of a man in 2010.

As at the time of that incident, TMZ reported that the “Got Me Waiting” crooner took more than the prescribed amount of pills when she became "overwhelmed by the lawsuit and the media attention" surrounding her relationship with her on-again, off-again married boyfriend, Antwaun Cook.

Later in 2017, her brother, Xavier, was left critically injured after a motorcycle accident that happened in Charlotte, North Carolina. According to Essence, it was not until March 2018 that he stood up for the first time since the accident.

While they were celebrating Xavier’s milestone, Fantasia’s family was also mourning the death of her nephew, Tyquan Vonricco Washington, whom CNN divulged was murdered in front of a home in Greensboro, North Carolina. Despite the many struggles in her life, Fantasia has appeared to be in a better place as she told CNN that:

“I believe that that was necessary and on purpose for me to be able to be the woman I am today and run a business.”

The singer claimed that the one thing that kept her going was her faith in God and her love for her husband, Kendall Taylor, whom she married in 2015.
