Inside Nas and Kelis' 5-Year Marriage and Divorce – Details of Their Allegedly Abusive Relationship
Kelis and Nas were once Hollywood's favorite couple, but this was followed by a bitter divorce and allegations of abuse. Here's a look into the couple's five-year marriage.
Nas and his ex-wife, Kelis, have not been each other's favorites for years, but long before that, the two were considered one of Hollywood's most famous couples.
In 2002, Kelis and Nas met for the first time at an MTV Music Awards after-party which was hosted by Sean' Diddy' Combs.

Shortly after, the duo started dating and in 2002, Nas proposed to Kelis. Nearly three years after their engagement, the pair tied the knot in front of 175 guests at a ceremony held in Atlanta.
Despite their popularity, the couple managed to keep their marriage away from the public eye. Still, three years into their union, rumors of Nas' alleged infidelity started popping up, but no substantial proof could be found.
In April 2009, Kelis, who was seven months pregnant, surprisingly filed for divorce from Nas. At the time, she cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split.
Four months after filing for divorce, the couple welcomed their baby, son Knight Jones amid the process of their divorce. While Knight was Kelis' first child, Nas was already a father to Destiny, whom he welcomed in a previous relationship.
After years of keeping quiet about the reason for their split, Kelis finally came out to discuss the circumstances surrounding her divorce from Nas.
Last year, Nas reportedly admitted that he's optimistic that things would get better between him and Kelis.
In 2018, Kelis described her five-year marriage to Nas as a toxic relationship while adding that she had suffered both mental and physical abuse.
According to her, there were several times Nas would get drunk and become violent towards her, which would cause her to fight back in self-defense. Kelis also revealed that by the time she filed for divorce in 2009, Nas was cheating on her in addition to the abuse.
Five months after Kelis opened up about her experience in their marriage, Nas came out to deny the allegations while also pleading with Kelis to allow them to be better examples for their son, Knight.
Surprisingly, Nas went on to accuse his ex-wife of being the abusive partner, claiming that he endured a decade of abuse from her. The rapper also claimed that Kelis had been keeping his son from him, despite winning joint custody a few months prior.
While it's unclear where the exes stand with each other today, it seems the duo are in a better place. Last year, Nas reportedly admitted that he's optimistic that things would get better between him and Kelis.
Most importantly, Nas revealed that he had nothing but love for his ex-wife, and hopefully, Kelis feels the same way. Here's to better days for Kelis and Nas!
