On Tuesday evening, a tragedy occurred when a mass shooting ensued at a funeral home in Chicago. It’s been reported that at least 14 people were injured in the incident.

A group of people was at a funeral for Donnie Weathersby, 31, in Auburn Gresham, Chicago, trying to pay their last respects to the deceased when the event took a turn for the worst. The person who was being buried was a victim of gun violence.

In an ironic and sad turn of events, the mourners also found themselves facing the same tragedy. According to the Chicago Police First Deputy Superintendant. Eric Carter, a mass shooting ensued at the funeral.

PEOPLE IN CAR OPEN FIRE

Carter shared at a press conference how at 6:30 p.m., a black car was spotted heading west on 79th Street when people inside it started firing at the attendees. The funeral was being held at the Rhodes Funeral Services funeral home at 1018 W. 79th St.

Mourners began firing back at the vehicle. The car turned north on Carpenter Street while still firing at the people attending the funeral.

14 PEOPLE INJURED

The vehicle then crashed into a parked car which was standing midway down the block. The people inside it managed to get out and fled the mass shooting in multiple directions.

That night, a person of interest was interviewed by the police. Carter revealed how 14 people were taken to five different hospitals with unknown conditions.

PEOPLE TAKEN TO HOSPITALS BY AMBULANCE

Around 60 shell casings were discovered at the crime scene. About nine people were transported by ambulances from the scene, according to the Fire Department.

DIFFERENT HOSPITALS RECEIVE VICTIMS

Most of the victims were received by the University of Chicago Medical Center and the Oak Lawn Advocate Christ Medical Center. Others were also taken to the Stroger Hospital of Cook County, the St. Bernard Hospital, and the Evergreen Park OSF Little Company of Mary Medical Center.

MORE VICTIMS DISCOVERED

Two more victims were also discovered near 63rd street. They transported themselves while a total of 11 transportations was done by ambulances.

ALL VICTIMS ARE ADULTS

A woman was shot several times. Victims, all adults, ranged with serious to critical conditions when they were taken to the hospital.

BYSTANDER SHOT

Currently, it isn’t clear if the victims are the mourners only or some are part of those in the vehicle. One of those shot was a bystander who lives close to the funeral home.

A police detail was requested for the funeral service in anticipation of some sort of retaliation to Weathersby’s murder.
