Hoda made the revelation during an interview that she and her “Today” colleague, Jenna Bush Hager, had with ET Online via FaceTime. According to Hoda, Kathie recalled the last time she saw Regis and how frail he looked.
The cause of Regis's death was revealed by Linda Silvia—from the chief medical examiner's office in Farmington, Connecticut— to be a “myocardial infarction due to coronary artery disease and hypertension."
Despite his heartbreaking condition, Hoda explained that Kathie chose to focus on the positives of their friendship and professional relationship. In her words:
"(...) All she [Kathie] could think about were these years and years of the richness that they had together and he said the best years of his professional life were the ones spent with Kath."
Kotb then recounted Regis's previous appearances on "Today" show saying that the late television presenter managed to connect with not just her and Jenna, but with the crew and audience, in a bid to make everyone happy.
During an appearance on “Today” last month, Kathie had recounted to the show’s hosts about the last time she saw her late friend. As noted by ET Online, the 66-year-old said Regis and his wife, Joy, visited her a couple of weeks ago.
The mini-reunion turned out to be a good one for the group as they sat on Kathie’s porch and “enjoyed each other’s company. The publication recalled that Kathie and Regis built a friendship after they started working together on their unforgettable show, “Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee,” in 1985.
Even though Kathie exited the show in July 2000, she and the late TV presenter and talk show host remained close.
The news of Regis’ death was announced by Us Magazine who pointed out that Regis died at the age of 88, on Friday, July 24. In a statement obtained by the outlet, his family wrote:
“His family and friends are forever grateful for the time we got to spend with him — for his warmth, his legendary sense of humor, and his singular ability to make every day into something worth talking about.”
