KNIGHT'S RELATIONSHIP
Knight and McDowell tied the knot in April 2001. The duo reportedly met ten years earlier but only started dating about three months before they got married.
Before her marriage to McDowell, Knight was previously married three times. Her first marriage was to James “Jimmy” Newman” in 1960 when she was only 16.
Despite the many challenges in her previous marriages, Knight seems to have found her happily ever after in McDowell.
The couple welcomed two children but Newman had issues with drugs and he ended up abandoning his wife and kids when she was only 20.
Following his disappearance, Knight separated from him, and a few years later, they got a divorce. Newman passed away a few years after the divorce.
In 1974, Knight married her second husband, Barry Hankerson, with whom she welcomed one son named Shanga. Just like Knight, Hankerson was in the music industry, and during his career, he managed A-list artists like Aaliyah, Toni Braxton, and R. Kelly.
However, Hankerson’s marriage to Knight was short-lived and by 1979, the couple was divorced. Sixteen years after the end of her second marriage, Knight married motivational speaker Les Brown in 1995. After three failed marriages, Knight explained that she still believed in love.
KNIGHT'S SINGING CAREER
Born in Georgia in 1944, Knight began singing with her siblings at age 8 and together they formed a group called “The Pips.”
After recording several achievements with the group, Knight left “The Pips” in 1989 to launch her solo career. Although she did not record as much success as a solo artist, Knight continued to make music and is fondly referred to as the“Empress of Soul.”
