DWTS Host Tyra Banks Admits She Was Surprised by Jeannie Mai's Unfortunate Exit from the Show
Jeannie Mai, who was competing on “Dancing with the Stars” season 29, had to leave the show for health-related issues. The show’s cast and crew members have been sending love to her, including host Tyra Banks.
On November 2, ABC announced that “The Real” co-host would step down from the competition due to a “health concern” requiring immediate attention. Jeannie Mai herself later posted a photo on Instagram to explain what happened.
In the pic, Jeannie appeared smiling at the camera and resting on a hospital bed. The TV personality wrote in the caption that she “made it safely out of” her emergency surgery.

JEANNIE MAI’S POTENTIALLY LIFE-THREATENING CONDITION
She pointed out that it all started as a sore throat but eventually turned into a dangerous infection that closed about 60% of her airway.
Her “sore throat” developed into a throat abscess that spread quickly. Fortunately, her doctors identified the “potentially life-threatening” condition and made the right choices.
Jeannie also wrote that she was devastated about the fact that she had to leave “DWTS.” She apologized to her dance partner Brandon Armstrong and added:
“Dancing on this show has been the most exhilarating adventure. I've gained both beautiful friendships and loving supporters.”
REACTION FROM TYRA BANKS AND OTHER CELEBRITIES
Shortly after the sad news was announced, the show’s host Tyra Banks revealed that she was caught by surprise, adding that Jeannie was one of the strongest dancers in the competition.
Tyra described “The Real” co-host as “effervescent,” “warm,” and “sweet,” pointing out that seeing a person who was doing great experience what Jeannie went through was “very sad.”
Jeannie’s final performance on the show was on October 26 for Villains Night.
Brandon Armstrong also took to social media to show support for Jeannie. He wrote that her show's journey was special, unique, and inspiring, adding that he loved every week they worked together.
He also wrote that they shared many good times and laughs together and thanked her for giving him a fantastic season. Brandon finished his heartfelt message wishing Jeannie a speedy recovery.
Other current and past competitors of “Dancing with the Stars,” like Monica Aldama and Kaitlyn Bristowe, also pointed out on social media that Jeannie would be missed and wished her a speedy recovery.
