Michigan Couple Finally Welcome a Daughter after Giving Birth to 14 Sons
A Michigan couple received the gift they never thought possible. After giving birth to 14 sons over almost three decades, Kateri Schwandt and her husband finally welcomed a daughter to their big family.
The Schwandt family is one of the larger families out there in this day and age, but that is the last thing on Kateri and Jay's mind after she recently gave birth to their 15th child.
On November 4, Kateri went into labor at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Not knowing the sex of their baby, the couple went into "shock" when they found out that their newborn is a girl.
After his wife gave birth to 14 boys over 28 years, Jay Schwandt figured it "wasn't medically possible" for the couple to have a girl.
THE SHOCKING NEWS
Because Kateri gave birth to 14 boys spanning 28 years, the couple thought it "wasn't medically possible" to have a daughter. But the newest addition to their family, Maggie Jayne Schwandt, proved it wasn't the case. Speaking to "Good Morning America," Jay recalled the precious moment.
"I was in shock, I remember it vividly, I couldn't speak," Jay said. "I had to double-check."
HOME WITH THE BOYS
Newborn Maggie is now home with her 14 brothers, who also reacted to the news in disbelief, and according to Jay, their home is every bit like the "fraternity house" one could imagine with so many sons. Laughing, Jay added:
"It's exactly what you would think a house with 14 brothers is like. Some lifestyle changes need to be made. We'll do it little by little."
THE BOYS
Before welcoming Maggie to the family, Jay said that he literally couldn't imagine having a daughter. The couple's sons range in age from 2 to 28, and most of them are still at home, but Jay can't wait for his daughter to get older.
Even though he surmised that Maggie might become a tomboy with 14 brothers in tow, Jay wishes for an entirely different experience this time around, and if it comes true, she will be a real little "girly girl."
THE RECORD
While the Michigan family is right up there with other big families like the Radford's in Britain with 22 children and the Suleman's with 14 children, they come nowhere near the current record.
According to a monastery's report to the government in Moscow, the Russian peasant Feodor Vassilyev and his wife had a grand total of 69 children between 1725 and 1765.

Broken down, Vassilyev's wife gave birth to four sets of quadruplets, another seven sets of triplets, and 16 pairs of twins spread across 27 separate labors. The record they set for having the most children in the world still stands today.
Relatedly, the famous actor Alec Baldwin and his family might not come close to record-holding size, but it's not small either, and they recently also welcomed a new addition to the Baldwin clan.
Hilaria Baldwin gave birth to their fifth child and son Eduardo in September, and according to the new mom, expanding the family more isn't in the cards right now. The pandemic filled year was a long one, and feeling "tired," Hilaria would rather focus on the family they have now.
