The "Being Mary Jane" star who has a haircare brand has often been open about being on the receiving end of racial discrimination in Hollywood regarding matters like her fashion sense or hairstyles.
During her time in "America's Got Talent," Union claimed that she was scrutinized and judged for her hair choices which they termed as "too Black." Despite the horrendous experience, Union is determined not to compromise when it comes to her hair.
In an interview, the actress revealed that her position as an established actress had granted her the opportunity to sign hairstylists as part of her contract whenever she is working on a new project.
In an interview with Elle, Union opened up about how she was insecure about her Black beauty and natural hair at the start of her career. She noted that she wore relaxers from when she was eight until her thirties.
However, things changed in her forties when she embraced her full self and became unapologetic. Now, she hopes to pass on that "shameless self-love" to her daughter Kaavia and the young women around her.
Last month, Union broke the internet when she rocked an inspirational early aughts look that featured a belly chain from Dion Lee. She proved she was a fashion icon with an oversized blazer and pants over a haltered crop top.
