Speaking of his typical childhood in Toronto, Dan revealed to People recently that he got into trouble a lot growing up with his legendary comedic actor father Eugene.

Dan founded Not a Real Company Productions with his father, Andrew Barnsley, and Fred Levy, in 2013. The first project they worked on was a TV pilot with CBC, which resulted in "Schitt's Creek."
Dan also appears in the series together with his father, his sister Sarah Levy, Annie Murphy, Catherine O'Hara, and Chris Elliott. His work on the show got him nominated for many different awards.
