My husband changed after winning ten million dollars on the lottery and asked for a divorce. But in the end, I got more than I ever hoped for, and he was ruined.

Allan and I had been married for almost ten years. We had our ups and downs, but everything was great for the most part. We weren’t wealthy, but we both had stable jobs that paid the bills, and we could save enough for rainy days.

We didn’t have children, except for two adorable cats. But in this day and age, the meaning of family has expanded. You don’t need to have kids to make one. You only need tons of love and care, but Allan forgot that after a surprising event.

“Claudia! You won’t believe what just happened!” Allan exclaimed excitedly when he got home that evening.

“What’s going on? Did you get a promotion?” I asked him.

“No! It’s ten times better than that! I just won $10 million in the lottery!” he continued.

“What? That’s impossible! Nobody wins the lottery!” I replied.

“I know! That’s what I always thought, but I bought a ticket just for laughs today, and I won. What are the odds? Claudia, even after taxes, this means I’m rich…well, we’re rich!” Allan explained happily.

I couldn’t believe it still, but a few days later, he received the money. “This is incredible, honey. We’ll be able to pay off this house and get some things we need,” I told him, smiling at the prospect of not having any more debts.

“Well, let’s not go spending this money just yet. I need to think about things first,” Allan said absentmindedly while looking at his bank statement on the computer.

“Oh. You have to pay off your student loans too, and then, we can invest some of it so that it'll grow for our retirement,” I suggested.

“We’ll see,” my husband added and stayed quiet. I let the subject go but frowned. Allan was acting pretty strange. Maybe he was in shock over this insane amount of money. Hopefully, he didn’t want to splurge on crazy luxuries like new celebrities did and waste it all.

Over the next few days, Allan became even more reserved. He wasn’t that type of person at all. And his reactions to a few things changed too.

“Honey, my purse is a little old and ratty. Do you think we can buy a new one? Maybe one of those fancy ones that last for a while?” I asked him.

“What? Now you want to spend my money like there’s no tomorrow,” he snapped.

“What? No, that’s not what I wanted. I just thought—” I started, but he interrupted me.

“You thought I would buy you something. Why don’t you buy it with your money?” Allan yelled. So I apologized and didn’t bring it up again. He had never been like that with me, and it was concerning.

I stayed pretty quiet the following days, trying not to anger him for any reason, but everything I did was wrong. I couldn’t clean properly, and even when I made his favorite dish, he called it disgusting.

That night he ordered takeout and didn’t offer to buy anything. Why was he acting so weird? A few days later, our kitchen pipes broke. It would cost a few hundred dollars to fix, and that set him off.

“I can’t believe you would do this!” he screamed.

“I didn’t do anything, Allan. Pipes break, especially if the house is old. We’ve been living here for almost ten years. It was bound to happen,” I answered as calmly as possible.

“No. You were careless on purpose. You can’t handle money, especially if it’s not yours. You want an excuse to use my money and drain me dry. You’re a horrible woman. I can’t believe I married you. Get out!” Allan yelled some more.

After the past weeks, I was more than happy to oblige. I went to my mother’s house, hoping he would come to his senses and contact me to apologize. He was not acting normally. But then, I received divorce papers from him.

I was shocked. Allan wanted to divorce me? I hadn’t done anything. I couldn’t believe this. Had money truly changed him that much? I wanted to talk to him to clear things up. However, I wasn’t going to beg for his love.

In the end, we divorced, and I only kept the cats. I didn’t want anything to do with his horrible lottery money that destroyed our marriage. I was not a gold-digger, and no one would ever call me that. But being a one-person income was hard.

I moved into a small one-bedroom apartment and didn’t have that much spendable money anymore. But I was better alone with my fur babies. Some days, I thought that we would still be a family if Allan hadn’t won that money.

But I couldn’t blame everything on the lottery. I needed to move on. Eventually, I was promoted and was able to afford my new single lifestyle better. But one day, I received a strange call. “Hello?” I said to the phone.

“Claudia! It’s Jared Blake. I’m Allan’s friend from work. We met at the last Christmas party. Do you remember me?” a man said over the phone.

“Oh, yes. I remember you, Jared. I don’t understand. Why are you calling me?” I wondered.

“Look, I didn’t know who else to call, but Allan hasn’t been at work in a while. He doesn’t answer the phone or anything on social media. Do you know where he could be?” Jared asked.

“I have no idea. You know that we got divorced, right?” I replied.

“I know. I thought that was the stupidest thing he ever did. But I wondered if maybe he had called you. I don’t know if he’s missing. Can you help me find him?” Jared added.

“Ok. No problem. How about we meet up and go over to our old house. As far as I know, he was still living there,” I said. I met up with Jared, and we went to find Allan.

There was a “For Sale” sign on the front yard, and I felt a bit nostalgic that Allan was selling our home. But Jared and I went inside to find him sitting on the kitchen table, and there was nothing else in the house.

“Allan, why haven’t you answered your phone?” Jared asked. “I was worried, man. Are you moving?” Allan looked up, saw us, and started telling us what happened. Apparently, he started dating this woman who was a real gold-digger.

“She took everything!” Allan cried when he finished.

“Wow, that’s awful. I can’t believe people like that exist,” I muttered. Allan looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“This is your fault! If you hadn’t left me, this wouldn’t have happened!” he yelled at me.

“What? You kicked me out, and you filed for divorce. You can’t blame me for this. I never wanted your stupid lottery money. You changed after that,” I retorted.

“Shut up! Shut up! It’s all on you! You did this! Now, I can’t even afford this house!” Allan kept crying, but I was done with this show.

“I’m leaving. This is karma for what you did to me. I hope I never see you again,” I said and left.

“Allan, you’re such an idiot,” I heard Jared say to my ex-husband, and then he followed me outside. “Hey, Claudia. Wait a second.”

“I can’t help him, Jared. It’s not my place anymore,” I told him.

“No, that’s not what I wanted to say. Would you like to have coffee with me?” Jared asked. I was surprised but agreed. And we never stopped talking. Jared and I started dating. We got engaged after a few months, and I moved in with him.

He also loved my cats, and I loved how family-orientated he was. He came from a prominent family in town and was always surrounded by them. In the end, I had everything I could ever hope for, and the truth is that I was the lucky one in this scenario, not Allan.

What can we learn from this story?

  1. No amount of money can buy a family. Realistically, money is important, but the people in your life matter more.
  2. Money that comes easily can fly off easily. If you come into some money, be careful because evil people might be on the chase.
