The family of a black teenager, Nekia Trigg, resorted to extreme measures following a viral incident involving the 18-year-old and a cop. New reports show that the family hastily evacuated their Texas home to escape the resulting death threats.

Trigg's attorney, Kim Cole, confirmed the relocation, saying social media users have bombarded them with countless threats to their lives.

Some of the messages explicitly jeered the family for getting what they deserved following the altercation with the police. More than netizens, Trigg's mother Antanique Ray feared the retaliation of the locals and the Kaufman County Sheriff's deputies.

Speaking on the basis of Ray's fears, sources revealed that the family generally had a phobia for law enforcement due to traumatizing experiences of close friends and relatives.

Trigg's recent encounter, which led to the detention of her and her mom, only served to heighten their misgivings. According to the reports, sheriff's deputies approached the teenager after receiving calls reporting her suicide attempt.

Trigg reportedly kept throwing herself in front of passing vehicles moments before officers arrived to deescalate the situation. However, the intervention of deputies seemed to have made things worse.

Trigg's lawyer affirmed Ray’s intention to file a civil rights lawsuit against Kaufman County and the offending deputy.

A bodycam video of the altercation has since gone viral. The footage showed the teenager in tears as she walked barefoot on the roadside. The officer wearing the bodycam walked behind her, asking some definitive questions to identify her better and find out her mental state.

Amid the exchange, the officer grabbed the girl's arm, further intensifying her panicked state. Then, as she struggled while wailing loudly, the officer threatened to handcuff her if she attempted to pull away.

Eventually, he asked her to sit on the floor. When she failed to comply, the officer forced her down seconds before everything went blank. Trigg's voice could be heard in the background as she kept screaming for the officer to get off her stomach as she couldn't breathe.

Ray soon showed up at the scene, urging the officer to listen to her daughter's plea and quit straddling her, so she could breathe. She also maintained her daughter was innocent.

As the visuals returned, Trigg's mom continuously accused the officer of taking off his body cam while he was on top of her daughter. The white cop eventually charged the woman for assaulting an officer and obstructing justice. She also faces other outstanding charges.

Both women, who were led away in handcuffs following the incident, have been released, providing them the opportunity to flee the city a day later due to the death threats.

While the family refrained from disclosing their new location, Trigg's lawyer affirmed Ray's intention to file a civil rights lawsuit against Kaufman County and the offending deputy Conner Martin on her daughter's behalf.

The teenager, who recently graduated high school, doesn't seem as confident, as she fears her mom could face jail time over the incident. Her mom's sentence would invariably render her homeless, a fate she was unprepared to resign herself to.

Netizens have reacted with mixed feelings over the progress of the incident. While some blamed the cop for escalating the situation by handling it inappropriately, others maintained that both women were irrational, and hence, deserved their fate.

Most advised Trigg to seek medical attention for a possible problem with her mental health while commending deputy Martin for acting in the girl's best interest to protect her from herself.
