When Adam’s parents divorced, he blamed his mother for everything and began to hate her. But soon after, the boy learned the real reason behind the divorce and how wrong he was to blame his mother.

“I’m just done with everything, James,” Adam overheard his mother talking to his dad after dinner. “I can’t stand it any longer. I’m divorcing you!”

“Don’t you think that’s too much, Linda? Did you even think about Adam before deciding about the divorce? What are you going to tell him?”

“See, James, you need to stop acting like you’re the only one who cares about Adam!” Linda replied angrily. “I love Adam. I just don’t want you in my life anymore. I am sick of you and your habits, and I'll do anything to get you out of my life!”

“Well then, I don’t see any point in continuing this relationship either,” James answered silently. “If you want, Adam can stay with you. I have no issues with it.”

“That’s not even a question, James!” Linda’s voice was firm. “No way am I going to leave Adam with you!”

Adam silently returned to his room after hearing his mom and dad talk about their divorce. However, he couldn’t understand why his mother had been so adamant about divorcing his father.

He had never seen his parents swear or even talk loudly to each other. They had always been a happy family and loved spending time together—at least that’s what Adam believed—until one day, it all fell apart.

That night after Adam went to his room, both James and Linda informed him of their decision. But what hurt Adam more than his parents' split was the the fact that it was his mother who initiated it.

He had heard his father trying to convince her to think about it at least once, but she didn't listen to him. She was bent on getting a divorce, and finally, it happened. Adam’s parents separated, and he started living with his mother.

One night, instead of sleeping, Adam stayed up late playing computer games. When Linda saw him, she began yelling at him. “Enough, Adam! It’s time to go to bed.”

“10 more minutes, mom, please!” Adam requested. “After that, I’ll sleep, promise.”

Linda was irritated by something at work, and she screamed at Adam. “Stop acting like your father and arguing with me all the time! You’re going to bed right now!”

At this point, Adam lost his cool. “Why do you want to control everyone’s life like that? First, you forced dad to divorce you, and now you’re yelling at me because I’m playing video games late at night? At least, I’m not like you who tore our family apart!”

Linda was taken aback. She couldn't believe Adam was blaming her for the divorce. Her eyes welled up with tears. “It’s nothing like that, Adam. I’m not trying to control your life, and I didn’t force your dad to divorce me. It was a mutual decision.”

“Whatever, mom!” Adam was furious. “I don’t care. I'm going to dad’s tomorrow. I think I’ll stay there for a while.”

“But Adam, listen...” Before Linda could say anything, Adam went to his room and slammed the door. The next morning, he packed his bags and left for his dad’s house.

Adam enjoyed living in his father’s home because he gave him more time than Linda and even spoiled him with treats like pizza and coke whenever he wanted.

Adam was really happy staying there, and he believed he was right to blame his mother for everything that had happened. After all, James was such a loving father to him. But one night, when James returned home late from work, Adam realized he couldn't have been wrong.

That night James brought his colleagues home, and they began drinking. The worst part was that they were noisy and uncivilized. When Adam tried telling James that they were too loud, James began cursing him. “You’re just an idiot like your mother! Get lost from here. I don’t want to waste my time talking to you.”

“But I can’t sleep, dad! You and your friends are too loud!” Adam was agitated.

James gave him a stern look. “Ahh...Before, your mother used to keep nagging me about having a drink with my friends, and now it’s you!”

“I had no idea you were like this, dad! I mean, just look at yourself!” Adam yelled at the top of his voice.

“Hey, kid! Don’t you dare raise your voice! It’s my home, and I will do whatever I like. If it’s troubling you, go back to your mom’s house!”

Adam was very upset with his father. He had never thought his dad would treat him like that. However, since this was the first time his father had behaved like that, Adam thought things would change if he spoke to his father about it. But sadly, that didn’t happen.

The drinking parties became a frequent event, and every time after drinking, James would start cursing Adam and Linda. Tired of facing it every day, Adam returned to his mother’s house and told her everything.

Linda was pleased that Adam returned home but admitted her father’s alcohol problems were the reason for their divorce. She hadn’t told Adam about it because he was young and loved his father a lot.

Adam hugged his mother and apologized for behaving rudely with her. He also promised her he would never misbehave again, and from that day on, they became closer than ever.

What can we learn from this story?

  • Don’t jump to conclusions. Adam decided his mother was to blame for the divorce without asking her why she took such a step.
  • Learn to say no to toxic relationships. Linda had had enough of James’ drinking troubles, and hence she decided to leave him.
