FONDA'S LIFE

Growing up, Fonda initially showed little interest in her father's career path. But as time passed, it turned out the activist had her father's acting genes.

Fonda's interest in acting strengthened after she met Lee Strasberg in 1958. She made her screen debut in the 1960 movie "Tall Story" and won two Academy Awards for her spectacular performances in 1971's "Klute" and "Coming Home" in 1978.

Fonda, now 83, had five Oscar nominations for Best Actress in movies such as "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" in 1969, "Julia" in 1977, and "The China Syndrome" in 1979. While she had a successful acting career, she was also into politics.

According to Fonda, when Hayden's mother heard she was pregnant, the older woman felt it would be better for the couple to welcome their child while married. She explained that Hayden's mother believed marriage would also benefit them in other ways.

Fonda, 83, recalled how Hayden was calling his mother to give her the news. She noted that he just listened to the person at the other end while he stared at her after informing his mother of the news.

However, after Hayden dropped the call, Fonda noted that he explained his mother's reasons for suggesting marriage. Fonda pointed out that the older woman thought of the public's perception towards a child outside marriage, the woman also explained:

"What if you go on the Johnny Carson show to talk about the war, and all he wants to know is why you aren't married."

Fonda noted that she wanted to marry Hayden but was careful after her time with Roger Vadim. But according to Fonda, it appeared that Hayden must have thought about marriage as it took only a few minutes for them to agree on getting married.
