A young woman was preparing for a trip overseas. When her friend found out, she asked her to fly with an unknown package and deliver it to someone who lived in the country to which she was traveling. However, the young woman refused, and her friend stopped talking to her. Now she isn't sure if she did the right thing.

Two months ago, Reddit user rainonmepanda made a post on the platform about an incident that happened between her and her friend. They had made a request that put their friendship in the balance, and when the Redditor refused to be a pushover, their relationship began to unfold.

Friendship is a sacred bond, and it's usually held together by trust. However, every once in a while, someone tries to use that trust to manipulate you for their own benefit. Especially when they know that you'd be willing to go out of your way to help them, even if it puts you in a compromised position.

AN UNEXPECTED REQUEST

By all accounts, Reddit user rainonmepanda was looking forward to her trip. Most people dream of traveling the world, and that dream was about to turn into reality for her. But then, as she was about to leave, her friend asked her to deliver a suspicious package to someone located in the country to which she was traveling.

As she explained, she completely trusted her friend, but she didn't want to do anything that may have landed her in trouble or worse. So she did what any person in her situation would do. She politely asked to see what was in the package before decided whether she'd be willing to take it with her.

Their fight didn't end there. She resorted to crying as a way to manipulate the Redditor into doing what she asked. She also sent texts to try and make the OP feel even worse about her request.

There have been countless stories of people who have been caught unknowingly transporting illicit substances who end up imprisoned in a foreign land. So it's understandable that the Redditor didn't want the same thing to happen to her, so she tried to take precautions. However, her friend didn't see things that way.

A FRIENDSHIP ON THE BRINK

When the Redditor asked to see what was inside the package, her friend immediately changed her tone. At first, she made it seem like the Original Poster (OP) was crazy for not trusting her. She expected her to go by her word and not ask any questions.

However, the OP knew better. She insisted on seeing what was inside, but her friend wouldn't budge. She told her she was "selfish" and "paranoid" for simply asking to see what was inside the package before traveling with it on an international flight.

Their fight didn't end there. She resorted to crying as a way to manipulate the Redditor into doing what she asked. She also sent texts to try and make the OP feel even worse about it. But the user stood up for herself because she knew the risk she would be taking by traveling with unspecified cargo through multiple airport security checks.

After some time, Reddit user rainonmepanda went through some of her comments and reflected on what had happened. She admitted that she could be a "huge pushover," and her friend tried to take advantage of this. And it almost worked because she wasn't sure if she did the right thing by asking to examine the package.

However, she later realized what her friend was trying to do before it was too late and was able to stand up for herself. She and her friend aren't on speaking terms because of this incident, but she has no regrets.

She also added that it seemed like her friend was indeed trying to get her to unknowingly traffic illicit goods to the other side of the world. The OP had researched and found compelling evidence against her friend, so it looks as if she dodged a massive bullet by simply standing up for herself.

HOW FAR SHOULD YOU GO TO SAVE A FRIENDSHIP?

The entire Reddit community took the OP's side. They felt she was right to demand her friend allow her to examine the package before taking it with her. Another Redditor recalled a similar story that happened in the past. In their post, the Redditor wrote:

"At the end of last year a woman ended up with the death sentence for smuggling drugs into a country. She was bringing something for a man she met online,.who of course disappeared."

At the end of the day, the Redditor may have lost a close friend, but she could've lost a whole lot more. It's hard to cut ties with someone you're close to, especially when you feel like you didn't do anything wrong. Some people are so affected by the loss that they're willing to do anything to make things better. For instance, a Quora user turned to the forum to try and seek advice on how to fix a broken friendship. The user asked:

Soon after, another user named Susan Keith replied and explained that the user was taking the wrong approach. Keith suggested that the user didn't have three reasons. Instead, they just needed one. The respondent added,

"You only need to say “I am sorry about our fuss. I’m sorry that I (offense). I hope you will forgive me and that we can get past this. You are my dearest friend and I do not want our friendship to end. I’m truly sorry."

Keith also said that the user needed to take full responsibility for their actions and avoid sharing the blame. All that's necessary to fix a true friendship is a sincere apology and the promise to change that behavior. And if your friend isn't willing to accept the apology, just give them the time and space they need to forgive you.

If done right, friendship can be a beautiful thing. However, if not, then it can become something incredibly toxic. Learn to cultivate true friendships and let go of the ones that seek to harm you.
