Irish actor and film producer Pierce Brosnan has been through many tragic experiences. Those sad occurrences admittedly contributed to making him the man he is today, whom the world has come to love.

However, the environmental activist owes his remarkable recovery to his second wife, Keely Shaye Smith. Before Pierce tied the knot with Smith, he was previously married to Australian actress Cassandra Harris.

Pierce's marriage to Harris yielded three children — two adopted kids: Charlotte Brosnan and Christopher Brosnan, and a biological son, Sean Brosnan. Here's a look into the life of Pierce and some of his tragic experiences.

TRAGEDY BEFALLS THE BROSNAN'S FAMILY

Pierce and Harris met each other in the late '70s, and after their first encounter, they hit it off and eventually tied the knot in 1980. Upon marriage to the actress, the Irish producer became a stepfather to Harris' biological children, Charlotte and Christopher.

In 1983, they finally welcomed their first child together, Sean. The family of five lived in harmony for years until tragedy began to strike. In 1987, Harris was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, which had metastasised.

As the years went by, Harris's health kept deteriorating, and in December 1991, she finally lost the battle and passed away after several series of treatments.

Not only was it a devastating moment for Charlotte and Christopher, who lost their biological father a few years before, but it was also a terrible experience for Pierce.

He and Harris were on the verge of celebrating their 11th anniversary. Following Harris' death, the actor was left with one of the most difficult jobs in the world — being a single father to his three children.

Pierce was left angry and confused, as being the perfect father seemed impossible without his wife. In a chat, Pierce made it known that Harris made him the man he was. She was there with him every step of the way and losing his wife was one of the most challenging experiences he had to deal with.

For several years after Harris's death, Pierce had the presence of his children to grant him solace and help him live past the tragic loss. However, what appeared to be a void filler for the actor, quickly transformed into another horrifying experience.

CHRISTOPHER'S STRUGGLE WITH ADDICTION

Harris's death was a very bitter pill to swallow, and it had a significant impact on the Brosnan family in more ways than one. Pierce was left broken, and his children had to deal with the loss of their mother in the best way they could.

In search of a way out, Christopher sadly turned to drugs. He became hooked on drugs like heroin and cocaine, and not long after, his life took a downward spiral.

Still, Pierce showed him much love and gave him the opportunity to be an assistant director on some of his father's films like "Tomorrow Never Dies," "The World Is Not Enough," and "Golden Eye."

Despite the career opportunities, Christopher's addiction never ended. Things got even worse for the young man, and in 1997, he was arrested for drinking while driving and given a three-month jail sentence.

After serving his jail term, Pierce tried his best to get Christopher back on track, however, all efforts proved abortive. The young man had chosen his path, and the reality was just too complicated for the "Die Another Day" star to bear.

Not only was Christopher an addict, but he also lost out on various opportunities to be great. After so many failed efforts to make Christopher desist from taking drugs, Pierce decided he was done with his son's reckless behaviour.

He disowned his son and cut all ties with him. During a 2005 interview with Playboy, Pierce revealed that he was no longer in touch with Christopher. He said his son was very lost and having a hard life, but he believed he would recover.

Pierce's belief in his son appeared to have worked out as the former made it known in 2019 during an interview with Esquire that he and Christopher had reconnected and had established a loving communication.

SEAN'S VICTORY OVER ADDICTION

Sean is the only biological child Pierce shared with his late wife. The actor and Harris welcomed their son on September 13, 1983. The middle-aged man appears to have it all together, however, he battled his fair share of struggles.

In 2000, he was involved in a car accident, which saw him sustain several injuries. During his recovery stage, Sean reportedly developed an addiction.

However, he fought through it and according to Pierce, his son is thriving and is studying for a psychology degree. Apart from being a student, Sean is also deeply rooted in the entertainment industry.
