WHO WERE ALAN'S PARENTS?

According to the content of his book, Alan's mom, Joan Browne, suffered some mental health issues. She often had a weird countenance, but the young boy witnessed something that changed his perception of his mother at age six.

She had married a famous performer and an award-winning actor, Robert Alda, and they lived in a two-bedroom apartment above a nightclub. Robert often worked with scantily dressed women, and this caused an argument in their marriage.

On one occasion, his mother tried to stab his father after he arrived late from work; she had a gut feeling that her husband was sleeping with one of his workers.

Thankfully, the situation was put under control as Alan's dad struggled with his wife, gaining access to the weapon. They had engaged in a heated argument that deteriorated, and both parties did not care if their son watched them fight.

In the end, Alan ran with the knife into a table to prevent his mom from killing his dad. Shortly after the incident, the couple settled, and things returned to normal; but it remained ingrained in their son's mind.

During one of their family mealtimes, young Alan decided to spring up the topic after seeing the knife stuck n the table. His mother denied the actions, laughed lightly to dismiss it, and reassured her son that she was too in love with Richard to do such a thing.

After that episode, Alan learned that keeping things bottled up instead of addressing issues or being blunt was not how his family operated. Although he was a little different, his folks feared he would embarrass them because of his eagle eyes and bluntness.

Still, other incidents like Richard's unwillingness to explain to his son who he voted for after one of the elections also made Alan comfortable staying mute about some issues. One of the most important was Joan's mental health.

At the time, nobody talked about her behavior in the house. It was also taboo to mention it outside their home because people would discriminate against them rather than become sympathetic to their cause.

The only explanation Alan could come up with was that his sins were responsible for how his mother reacted. When he approached adolescence and had learned about sin, he accepted his fate and never questioned it.
