Anthony Anderson's Wife Once Filed for Divorce from the 'Black-Ish' Star but Changed Her Mind 2 Years Later

"Black-ish" star Anthony Anderson might be with his wife now, but she once filed for divorce from the actor. Furthermore, Anderson's wife revealed they had separated long before filing for divorce.

Actor and comedian Anthony Anderson and his wife, Alvina Stewart, first met at Howard College during Stewart's first week on campus. The pair hit it off and eventually married in 1999.

Stewart and Anderson welcomed two children, their oldest daughter, Kyra, 26, and their youngest son, Nathan, 22. For most of their marriage, the couple seems to have lived a wonderful life together.

However, in 2015, they hit a rough patch as Stewart filed for

from her husband, citing "irreconcilable differences." In the filing, Stewart asked for custody rights for Nathan, a minor.

She wanted joint legal and primary physical custody of the couple's son, with Anderson getting reasonable visitation. Stewart also requested spousal support from her husband.

More surprising was that Stewart listed their date of separation as April 2014, meaning the couple had not been together for over a year before she filed the divorce petition. However, their break did not last.

Two years after the divorce filing, Stewart and Anderson reconciled as E! News reported that Stewart asked a Los Angeles judge to dismiss her divorce petition in January 2017.

During that month, Anderson and Stewart appeared at the SAG Awards together. At the time, the comedian

Entertainment Tonight that he was happy to have his wife by his side in public:

"It's fun. It's been a while since we've been on a red carpet together, but we're here tonight so we're excited about it."

Fortunately, the couple overcame the difficulties they were going through and chose to continue supporting each other. They now live happily together with their children, who are also working hard towards their careers.

Nathan regularly makes appearances on his father's Instagram, enjoying golf days and nights out together, and has appeared by his father's side on various red carpets throughout the years.

The 22-year-old also followed in his father's footsteps as he attended Howard University and went into acting. In 2018, Anderson revealed to Rachael Ray that Nathan would film a Netflix show with Rev Run.

Anderson admitted that he wanted Nathan to portray Andre Jr. in "Black-ish" but could not cast him because he was too cool to play the nerdy character.

Anderson's daughter Kyra keeps a low profile online as her Instagram account is private. She also makes fewer appearances on her father's Instagram, but he did share a sweet tribute for her birthday in 2021.

Although Kyra might be living a life out of the spotlight, Anderson has shared anecdotes about her and Nathan in several interviews.

Of course, being a comedian, Anderson usually adds a comedic twist to his storytelling. When asked if humor can get his children to do their chores during an interview with ABC, he joked that he got Nathan to laugh so hard that he agreed to cut his toenails.
