When a woman visited a doctor for her 12-week pregnancy scan, they told her something shocking. She refused to listen to their advice and is glad that she did.

Harriett Blakey and her partner Jamie were ecstatic when they discovered they were expecting a baby last year. Their first scan went well and indicated that there were no significant concerns. However, a few days later, the mother was told otherwise.

During a 12-week scan at her local hospital, a sonographer struggled to find the fetus and stated that the baby was not active. Per Blakey, the midwife was not positive and suggested that she contact her partner because something was wrong.

IT WAS AS IF THE BABY WAS ALREADY DEAD

The mother assured the midwife that her baby was okay because a previous scan showed no issues. However, the senior midwife revealed that the baby had nuchal translucency thickness, suggesting a severe problem.

Blakey shared: "I was spoken to as if my baby had already died. I asked her if there was hope, but she couldn't comment."

THE MOTHER WAS DEVASTATED

The expectant mom was heartbroken and shocked by the news. She purported that medical personnel also handed her a pamphlet for parents "Dealing with grief after terminating a baby with abnormalities."

It was too much to bear, and she experienced the pain a second time as she relayed the news to her partner. Blakey said: "I cried and grieved for a person who had died—I forgot the baby had a heartbeat and was still wiggling around."

A DOCTOR WHO CARED

Consequent scans revealed their child had Down syndrome and a blockage in her bowel—the parents were at their lowest after the revelation. Thankfully, a caring specialist at St. Thomas Hospital in London supported and educated them.

Blakey explained: "Every scan was a science lesson. He was magnificent." In November last year, the mom went into early labor and welcomed her baby Poppy.

HER BABY IS A GIFT

After a series of surgeries, her newborn could start the road to recovery and good health. The mom instantly fell in love with her infant and saw Poppy as a gift and not a burden.

The mom wished medical personnel would not offer termination at every scan when babies have medical conditions. She hoped her story would help other parents facing similar realities.

ANOTHER MOTHER REFUSED AN ABORTION

Many women have shared their experiences with doctors who urged them to terminate their pregnancies. They hoped to show others that a child's life is not over if they have a medical condition.

In York, England, a mom purportedly refused an abortion 14 times. In 2019, doctors told Kiera Meldrum that her baby had Grade 3 severe ascites to the bowel. She persevered despite this and went into labor at 34 weeks.

Now, she is happy she listened to her heart, like Blakey, who adores her bundle of joy. Both women hoped to show other expecting parents that their babies can have a good quality of life regardless of their doctor's judgments.
