EVERYTHING WE KNOW ABOUT FLORENCE + THE MACHINE'S FIFTH ALBUM “DANCE FEVER”
According to the artist, “Dance Fever” is a fable that sends the message “be careful what you wish for.” Amidst the pandemic, Welch was locked down in her home and binged on scary movies. She said:
“I couldn't watch a rom-com or a film where people were eating in restaurants. I needed to see people losing it.”
What came out of it was an album, “Dance Fever,” a title rooted in the dancing mania that plagued Europe after the Black Death. Welch's album contains several heavy rock songs that listeners can take to the dancefloor.
Rollingstone refers to the album as “a collection that speaks to all manner of anxieties, from shared experiences such as aging, womanhood, the fragility of the planet and the pandemic to more intimate musings on her career, relationships, loneliness.”
Everything about Welch's new album was carefully thought out, including the artwork and music videos spearheaded by director and photographer Autumn de Wilde. She said of Welch:
“She is an electric genius. I started to feel like the record she was making was very honest, very raw and modern, but also rich with otherworldly fantasy. I wanted to create a visual escape hatch into an ancient fairytale.”
With two great minds combined, Welch and de Wilde were able to have a single vision for cinematic and creative costumes. Welch collaborated with New York producer Jack Antonoff and Glass Animals' Dave Bayley as well.
