Tori Spelling Slammed for 'FaceTuning' Pic of Bullied Daughter Who Graduated amid Parents' Divorce

Tori Spelling became famous after playing Donna Martin in the teen drama series "Beverly Hills, 90210." Since then, she has been in the spotlight for many roles and most recently for "face tuning" her teenage daughter's photo.

Tori Spelling and her husband, Dean McDermott, have been together since 2006 and share five children, but marriage life has not been all bliss for the "Kiss The Bride" actress and her "Chopped Canada" host husband.

The two met in Ottawa, Canada, in 2005 while filming "Mind Over Murder." At the time, they were both still married to other people — Spelling to Charlie Shaniah and McDermott to Mary Jo Eustace.

Shortly after their meeting, they separated from their respective spouses and got together, marrying in a private ceremony in Fiji on May 7, 2006.

While no marriage is perfect, Spelling and McDermott's was marred with many ups and downs, among them McDermott's 2013 affair, featured in the couple's reality series "True Tori."

Following the affair, rumors of a split have been rife and have continued to mar their relationship after Spelling's photo without her wedding rings began to circulate.

The actress confirmed the possible breakup rumors during a 2021 SiriusXM Live interview where she shared that she no longer shared her bed with her husband as he slept "in a room." ET reports her to have said:

"Right now, my kids and dogs sleep in my bed."

And while an insider had disclosed to Hollywood Life that Spelling and McDermott would possibly work things out for their children's sakes, friends of the couple have since told Us Weekly that the duo is going through a "trial separation."

During their 15 years of marriage, McDermott and Spelling welcomed five children — Liam, Stella, Hattie, Finn, and Beau. Unfortunately for Stella, she faced bullying in fifth grade, but as her mother stated, the people that perpetrated the heinous act were never stopped.

In July 2021, the actress opened up about her daughter Stella's bullying experiences, saying that the teen rediscovered her inner drive after the painful experience.

She also shared photos of Stella from a photoshoot with Petite 'n Pretty for the brand's back-to-school campaign. The shoot was a triumph for the mother of five, who recalled how her child overcame the bullying situation.

"The Mistle-Tones" alum also said that the bullying had come not only from her daughter's classmate but also from her former school principal.

The bullying brought several other health complications, including panic attacks, stomachaches, headaches, and a spike in her asthma. Spelling said, as People reports:

"Emotions can be pretty powerful & manifest into physical ailments. She missed a lot of school due to this. But, what did remain was her drive & passion for baking, cooking, & crafting."

In June 2022, Spelling shared a milestone in her daughter's life, saying she recently graduated from middle school despite her challenges. She also took the chance to share the challenges her daughter had endured to get to graduation day.

SLAMMED FOR 'FACE TUNING' DAUGHTER'S PHOTO

Even amid rumors of their divorce, McDermott ensured he did not lag in celebrating his daughter's big day. The actor shared a photo of Stella on her graduation day, announcing how proud he was of her for the milestones.

In the since-deleted photo posted by McDermott, Stella had her hair styled in a natural blowout with a simple low-key make-up look.

However, Spelling's photo of her daughter caused controversy after fans compared the photo posted on her Instagram to that of McDermott. The actress faced backlash for using "filters" on her daughter's photos.

A side-to-side comparison of the photos showed that in Spelling's, Stella's cornsilk hair looked lightened to a platinum-blonde shade and smoothed out.

Her complexion looked blurred and contoured with heavy make-up, complete with artificial eyelashes, the opposite of how the teen looked in the photo shared by her father from the same celebration.

Fans quickly noticed the difference, with one saying that the person in the photo looked nothing like Stella. Others felt she was too young to have so much make-up on.

Seeing as the photo accompanied a caption about how Stella had been bullied in school, fans felt "face tuning" her daughter's photos was sending the wrong message to Stella.

In her defense, Spelling bashed the comments saying she was "horrified" at the suggestion that she had filtered the image, insisting that it was nothing more than "make-up" and "studio lighting."

She insisted that the photos she took of her daughter were not from the actual celebration in natural daylight. She shared that her daughter had decided to later up the amount of make-up on her face as she was a budding make-up guru, hence the "filtered" look.

In Spelling's photo, the actress also addressed her daughter's challenges in school before graduating, including vast adversity, ranging from COVID and migraines to severe anxiety.

Spelling also threw jabs at teachers and counselors who she said did not believe in her daughter and her ability to graduate, and yet, Stella had proved them all wrong.

Her comment did not sit well with some of her fans, who thought she was being selfish for bashing the teachers that had helped Stella through her studies. The commenter wondered why Spelling did not choose to homeschool her daughter instead.

MCDERMOTT DID NOT CELEBRATE STELLA'S 14TH BIRTHDAY

Shortly after her graduation, Stella celebrated yet another milestone — her 14th birthday. Spelling took to her Instagram to celebrate her daughter with a heart-warming message.

The actress praised her daughter's courage, creativity, and positive attitude towards all adversity, complimenting her prowess in various crafts such as crocheting, baking, and make-up skills. She wrote:

"My Jill of all trades. The most creative human I know. Biggest heart. Instinctual caretaker. Best sister. Best friend. Animal lover extraordinaire."

Perhaps due to McDermott and Spelling's ongoing uncertainty about their marriage, the actor did not celebrate his daughter's big day on his Instagram.
