When he met Evelyn, Stephen was dating someone else, and they had been together for a few years. When his at-the-time girlfriend gave him an ultimatum for them to get married, he said he needed to think about it, so he flew home to mull over things with his mum.
His mother made him realize he was not ready for marriage, and because he had one week to spare, he followed his mother to the Spoleto Festival event, where he met Evelyn in the lobby.
When he arrived at the event, he walked in with his mother on his arm, and Evelyn, who had spotted them, thought to herself:
"That man loves his mother."
Stephen had also spotted Evelyn and wondered who she was. It was love at first sight, and he knew he would have regrets if he did not say hello to her. When their eyes met, they realized they had grown up with each other but had not gone to the same school.
