Diana Had 'Crush' on Gay George Michael Who Supported Her When She Was 'Lonely' with Charles, Biographer Claims
During her unhappy marriage to Prince Charles, Princess Diana found a friend in Singer Michael George. But there are claims that the Princess saw him as more than a friend. Continue reading to know why a romantic relationship between the duo could not work out.
Princess Diana and Prince Charles's union will always be remembered as one filled with many traumatic occurrences. But, it was not always that way, as the pair's love seemed like a fairy tale at the beginning. The former couple first met in November 1977 at Diana's family estate in Northamptonshire, England.
The Princess of Wales was only 16 years old, and Charles was already dating her older sister. So, beginning a romantic relationship was far from the equation for the duo.

However, three years later, in July 1980, an incident at their mutual friend's house would see the start of their relationship. By September of that same year, the pair's relationship went public after Diana was spotted at the Royal Family's private Estate in the Scottish highlands.
Charles and his ex-wife continued their romance for a few more months before the former popped the question at Windsor castle in February 1981.

On February 24, Diana and Charles made their engagement public. Shortly after the Queen announced the excellent news from Buckingham Palace, the Prince of Wales told The Guardian:
"I feel positively delighted and frankly amazed that Di is prepared to take me on."

DIANA AND CHARLES' UNHAPPY MARRIAGE
On July 29, 1981, the former lovebirds exchanged wedding vows in a fairy tale ceremony at Westminster Abbey. An estimated 750 million people were reported to have watched the highly anticipated occasion.
The following year, Charles and Diana welcomed their first son, Prince William, and Prince Harry followed in 1984. Two years after the couple's second child arrived, Diana and Charles would start crumbling.

Their marital woes began when the Prince of Wales started an affair with his ex-girlfriend, Camila Parker Bowles. It was very difficult for Diana, and as time progressed, she slowly drowned in unhappiness.
"There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded," Diana confessed. The Princess could not discuss her problems with anyone, and her remaining years in the union were marred with heartbreak.

It was even more saddening because many others would have loved to have Diana by their side, but the man she chose paid zero attention to her. According to a report:
"She was the love object of everyone in the world except her husband."

INSIDE DIANA AND MICHAEL GEORGE'S FRIENDSHIP
Experiencing such unhappiness in her marriage made Diana feel very lonely and crave someone she could talk to and understand. Eventually, she found that someone in the person of English Singer and Songwriter Michael George.
The pair met backstage after a concert, and In James Gavin's book "George Michael: A Life," the author claimed that Diana was immediately smitten.

Their close friendship eventually began after the Princess complimented the singer on his good looks, and he said the same about her. In the following years, many would testify about how tight the pair's bond was, including Gill Pringle, the Mirror's former pop columnist.
The man believed that the close friends shared a sense of being prominent public figures that it was hard to know whom they could trust. So, they had to hold on to themselves and be each other's support.

According to Garvin's book, "Michael sensed a lonely woman." During their friendship, Diana and George would go for lunch together and share deep secrets. They were so close that the singer once called Diana "my darling" and gave her a gold watch.
George would reveal that the Princess of Wales was the only person he knew that could make him feel like an ordinary person. He and Diana talked about everything, including the latter's thoughts about her marriage. According to one of George's friends, Andros Georgiou:
"This was about two years before she and Charles officially separated. She told him their marriage had been an arranged one and that, as she'd been so young, she'd no real idea of what she was getting into."

Diana and George also spoke about the Princess's kids, and according to Georgiou, her face would light up whenever she did. Overall, the singer was Diana's support system.
Even when her marriage to Charles ended in 1996, George was the one she called to talk about it. Indeed, the pair's friendship was genuine, one of the reasons it lasted for more than a decade. Many could attest to how much the Princess adored the singer, including Diana's chef, Darren McGrady.
In a Twitter post, the chef recalled a wholesome memory of Diana teasing George about two glossy magazines on the front seat with him on the cover while driving to Kensington Palace.

THE LATTER STAGES OF DIANA AND GEORGE'S RELATIONSHIP
At some point in Diana and George's relationship, the Princess of Wales felt like the singer was more than a friend. However, Garvin claimed that George "kept Diana at a careful distance" and rarely called, even though he suspected that "she was lonely and would love to hear a friendly voice."
According to Garvin, George "sensed she had a crush on him." He knew they could not be together because he was secretly gay, so keeping a distance was the best option. The singer also confessed that he knew sleeping with Diana would have been a disastrous thing to do.

Nevertheless, George always gave a listening ear to the Princess of Wales whenever she had to rant about her challenges. Sadly, the duo's relationship ended when Diana died on August 31, 1997.
The singer was heartbroken when he heard that the Princess's car had sped through a tunnel in Paris while the paparazzi were chasing her. Only Diana's bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, survived the fatal crash.

George attended Diana's funeral that same year and donated the song "You Have Been Loved" to a Diana Tribute album. At the time, the singer was dating Kenny Goss, and the duo was spotted in public together. George continued his life and music career and died in 2016.
