Mom Makes Teen Daughter Pay Rent at Home, People Say She'll Send Her to a Nursing Home for This
A mother has been getting backlash from the Tiktok community since she revealed that she was making her daughter, who wanted to stay home, pay rent. The issue has sparked a serious debate, but the proud mom is convinced she is doing the right thing.
18-year-old Jada was enjoying her life as a teenager, looking forward to a new future of possibilities as she reached her legal age. But what she might not have seen coming was her mom preparing legal documents that mandated her to pay a sum of money every month to continue living under her roof.
Her mother, who lives with her in Oklahoma, posted footage on Tiktok that showed Jada signing the lease requiring her to pay $100 per month to continue living at home with a caption that read "when your 18-year-old decides to stay at home."

The short video, which had the song "It's a Hard Knock Life" playing in the background, then cut to the part where Jada was seen appending her signature with a caption that claimed the mom was setting her "up for success."
HOW USERS REACTED
The clip quickly went viral on Tiktok, amassing over one million views, and sparked a controversy among the viewers. It had thousands of likes as well as comments that saw some users supporting her decision and others condemning it.
The mother of six called it a "teaching moment," but a majority of those who commented seemed to be against her decision. Many users in the comment spoke about how their parents had gone down the same road and that it led to their estrangement from them in the end.
One user wrote, "Really, really terrible way of trying to instill any type of lesson or teach your kids anything." Another echoed the sentiment when she wrote:
“I would never make my child pay rent! My house and my husband’s we can pay for it! They can help if they want.”
Another commenter claimed it was "pathetic," and one went as far as saying if her parents did such a thing, she would never speak to them again.
There were even talks about how her daughter would return the favor in the future when the time came for the mother to go to a nursing home and could not afford it.

HER EXPLANATION
The dozens of hateful comments led the mother to make a follow-up video where she explained why she took the step. She said that at the age of 16, she was already a single mom, and her parents did not set her up to have a successful life, leaving her fighting tooth and nail to achieve her goals.
According to her, she does not want her kids to be solely dependent on her. She would rather they be able to handle the realities of life in the real world, which includes knowing how to browse through a legal document and not simply signing anything brought before her.

The woman mentioned that in their area of residence, people need a "renter's history" to get a place, and by taking $100 from her daughter each month, she was helping her create said history.
She also added that the 18-year-old Jada would only pay that bill while the mom continued to cover her car payment, insurance, and cellphone bills.

There were a lot of angry users who thought she was being unfair. However, there were also several supportive comments from users who thought she was on the right path.
One user wrote, "You're doing right; teach your kids responsibilities as early as possible." Another commented:
“I applaud you mom! It is setting her up for success. It’s teaching her life skills and responsibility.”
Others advised the mom not to spend the money she was taking from Jada. She was advised to save it up instead and give it to Jada when she's finally ready to leave the nest, making the lesson sink in more effectively.
This mother believed that making her teen daughter pay rent was a good way of preparing her for a harsh world. However, it may have a negative effect on their relationship, ruining it forever.
