An out-of-the-ordinary start to a romance led to what John called a "magical" moment between Janice Dyson and her husband.
He saw the human in her, Janice said, who was what John had been looking for his entire life. The couple later tied the knot in 2013.
WHO IS JANICE DAYSON, JOHN MCAFEE'S WIFE
After developing his anti-virus system, John accumulated a fortune; however, he faced murder accusations in Belize. Belize officials had implicated John in the 2012 murder of Gregory Faull, John's 54-year-old neighbor.
McAfee went to Guatemala to hide; he stayed in a resort for a month before he was arrested for entering the country illegally and deported to the US.
John was not charged with the murder accusations and continuously maintained his innocence. He believed he had been framed by the Belizean government, claiming the Sinaloa cartel controlled them.
A month after his deportation, Janice and John met in a Miami Beach café; a friend gave John a large sum of $ 5 bills, which he used to pay for Janice's services.
During an ABC 20/ 20 interview, John pulled out the wad of cash similar to the money he used to hire Janice as an escort for the night.
They got married in 2013 and moved to Lexington, Tennessee. John had saved Janice from a violent pimp after she spent years in sex trafficking. After her marriage, she was able to reunite with her children.
For the first two years of their relationship, Janice claimed she was in a difficult situation where she had to spy on John and report his information to her pimp.
When they first met, Janice did not know who John was or about his fortune; however her pimp, who was working with the Beliz cartel bosses, did and instructed her to report any knowledge about John's movements.
This continued even after they had married in 2013; Janice loved her husband dearly but was petrified of disobeying her orders.
In 2019 Janice spoke about the nature of the alleged orders she'd been given and how they worsened over time. She was told to hide poison in John's food and grant them access to his home without his knowledge.
Janice kept what she called a "scary situation," a secret from her husband, which caused a strain on the relationship.
John eventually found out about the spying and Janice's involvement. However, he understood her position and chose to stay with her.
John did not share how he discovered Janice had been spying on him; he said he did not mind. Janice was in a hard place, and when she finally came clean, he called it a beautiful moment.
Janice and John fled the States in 2019 on a yacht headed to the Bahamas after he suspected US law enforcement was trying to extradite him.
But the couple and their crew were detained by Dominican Republic police for having firearms aboard the yacht. They were able to travel to Europe, where they hid before John was arrested in Barcelona for tax-related crimes in October 2020.
In 2021, Jance shared a Father's Day message dedicated to John, who spent the occasion in prison. He had been in jail in Spain for eight months when she shared the tweet, stating that the experience had taken a toll on his mental and physical health.
