Have you ever stopped to help someone in need? It takes sacrifice, and only a tiny percentage of people are selfless enough to lend a helping hand, knowing they won't receive anything in return.

One woman from Port Huron, Michigan, didn't hesitate to help a stranger who desperately needed assistance. She never knew it would cost her everything.

Helping A Stranger In Need

Friends and family described Candy Trumbull as a lovely woman with a generous heart—her actions on a Tuesday evening in August 2022 undeniably proved this.

Candy was a person who helped everyone she met, giving others the shirt off her back if they needed it.

A Marysville man contacted 911 to get emergency assistance after he hit a cyclist. Candy, who stayed close by, saw the incident unfold, and when she noticed someone had been hit by a car, she ran to help the 56-year-old victim.

Two Victims

Candy was preoccupied trying to assist when tragedy struck again—this time, she was the victim. Someone driving an older light-colored Lincoln hit her and then raced away from the accident scene.

Candy's son, Charlie Priess, revealed that his "amazing mom" sent her younger son home to get more assistance. He believes that action saved his life. Priess explained:

"She told him to go get me. And on the way back to the house, [he] heard the bang from her getting hit. That’s when he said, 'Charlie - mom is on the ground, and she’s not moving.'"

The cyclist and Candy died at the scene, and the ordeal devastated their community. Friends, family, and strangers were heartbroken and spoke kindly of Candy. They held a vigil to honor her and the sacrificial life she lived.

She Was Their Hero

Donna Trumbull, Candy's sister, expressed: "She is nothing short of a hero in all aspects." She noted that Candy was a person who helped everyone she met, giving others the shirt off her back if they needed it.

Candy's brother, Milan Trumbull, called her a "blessed soul" and said she lived and died for others. He also hoped people would remember his 40-year-old sister as a hero.

Lost The Love Of Her Life

Candy's mom, Margaret Boynton, was emotional as she expressed that the love of her life had been stolen. Family members were grieving the loss and couldn't hold back their tears as they spoke with the media.

Candy's sister also shared about her pain and heartache on Facebook. She wrote:

"Rest in peace, Candy. You will be greatly missed. [There are] many broken hearts because you were stolen from us. We love you so much, and we will take care of the kids. We, as a family, make that bond."

The St. Clair County Sheriff is hoping to apprehend the person who hit Candy, so they get justice for the family. They located him and were investigating the incident.

The Family Needs Assistance

The selfless woman's family is asking for help. Her two young sons have been left without a mother, so a GoFundMe page was created to support them. A message on the page noted:

"Candy was a single mother. The family needs donations to cover the funeral costs and help with the boys' living expenses. The family is beyond [devastated] and needs financial reprieve as they plan for the future."

We send our heartfelt thoughts, prayers, and condolences to Candy's family as they navigate this devastating time. RIP to a true angel.
