Ten-year-old Florence was heartbroken. She knew her mommy was far away in the skies with the angels and happy there. But what bothered Florence was that her mother was not coming back for her.

"Are you not coming to see me, mommy? Not even once? You said you loved brushing my hair and making dresses for me. Do you not love that anymore?"

Florence's heart was filled with countless questions and worries. Every week, when she visited her mother Lydia's grave, she would ask her to come back, just to hug her, and she promised that she wouldn't bother her again.

Surprisingly, one day, when Florence visited Lydia, she saw a woman as pretty as Lydia at the cemetery. The little girl thought her prayers were answered!

"Mommy! I'm here!" she cried as she ran up to the woman and hugged her. The woman was shocked...

Losing a loved one is never easy but especially tough for those little hearts. Florence was no exception.

Her father had left her even before she came into the world, and a terrible car crash took her mother away from her. Florence didn't have grandparents, and her distant relatives were least bothered to look after her. In the end, she was placed in a foster home.

"Are you by any chance Florence?" she asked, and Florence nodded. "Yes, I am!"

Florence's foster parents, Jake and Irene, loved her nothing less than their own child. For them, she was the light in their dark world of failed fertility treatments and shattered dreams, but little Florence was far from accepting of her new home.

"Why are you cleaning my room?" she snapped at Irene one day. "I only like it when mommy makes my bed!"

"Florence, honey," said Irene gently. "I was just trying to help you. The room was a mess! I thought maybe I could help you clean it?"

"I didn't ask you for help! Why do you want to be my mommy? I have only one mommy! And she will come for me one day!"

In the end, Irene stopped stepping into Florence's space. When the girl was in a good mood, she didn't mind if Irene organized her toys or clothes, but otherwise, she was irritated at anyone who touched her things, even Jake.

Jake and Irene were, of course, very hurt by Florence's words, but they let her slide because she was a little girl who'd lost her mother. However, they were consistently worried about how to bridge the gap between them and Florence. Luckily, Irene had an idea soon after...

"Are you sure that'll work?" Jake asked her.

"There's no harm in trying, honey. Maybe she'll warm up to us after witnessing how much we value her feelings. We should try this," she suggested.

From that week on, they started taking Florence to Lydia's grave. "Spend some time with your mommy, honey. Jake and I will be in the car, ok?"

Much to their surprise, it worked! One day, when Jake and Irene took Florence to meet Lydia, she said, "Thank you. I think I can call you new mommy and new daddy, but I would still ask for my mommy to come back. You and the new daddy are nice."

Irene was in tears. "We love you, darling. When you visit your mom today, tell her how much we appreciate her sending you to us. She raised the most beautiful girl in the world."

Florence smiled and dashed to Lydia's grave. Then she laid the roses she'd brought on her grave, sat alongside her, and began talking to her.

"Don't you feel cold under the ground, mommy? I can get you a blanket. I will ask my new mommy to get you one. But mommy…" her eyes began to well up. "Do you not miss me? Will you never come back for me? My new mommy wanted to thank you. Can you please come back so she can thank you?"

Every time Florence visited the cemetery, she sat beside Lydia's grave for a very long time, pouring out her heart's worries. But one day, when she came to visit her with roses, she saw the place was already occupied.

Florence's happiness knew no bounds as she saw the woman standing in front of Lydia's grave. Her mommy was there! She was wearing a black dress, but why was she crying? Florence decided to console her!

"Mommy! I'm here! Stop crying!" she screamed and ran up to her.

The woman was taken aback when Florence hugged her. "Wait, what did you call me? Mommy?"

Florence nodded. "I missed you so much, mommy! I love you! Please don't go back! Please stay!"

"Are you by any chance Florence?" the woman asked suddenly. "Lydia's daughter?"

Florence nodded. "Yes, I am!"

"Oh, honey!" the woman hugged her. "I am so glad to see you finally! The last time I saw you was when you were a baby!"

Meanwhile, Irene and Jake, who were sitting in their car waiting for Florence, wondered why she was taking too long. They decided to check on her, and they were shocked to see the woman hugging her.

"Excuse me, what are you doing with our daughter? Get away from her!" Jake told her rather stiffly.

Then the woman looked up at them, and they were shocked. She looked exactly like Lydia!

"Who…who are you?" Jake stammered. "You look like Florence's birth mother!"

Wiping her tears, the woman said, "I am Florence's aunt, Roseanne. Lydia was my twin sister. I moved away from home at a young age to establish a career abroad. I wasn't in touch with Lydia, so I didn't know she had passed away. My so-called family didn't bother to inform me until I came here! I was so heartbroken when I learned Florence was in a foster home! How could they do that? How could they leave their blood like that?"

"But we love Florence…we are her foster parents," said Irene tearfully. "We didn't have any children, so we took Florence in. She's our daughter."

"I know," sighed Roseanne. "Thank you for that. Don't worry," she added, looking at Jake and Irene's pale faces. "I am not going to force her away from you two. It's up to Florence to decide what she wants…."

Jake and Irene's heart dropped as they heard that. They knew Florence would never choose them over Roseanne. Never. But they were wrong...

"Can we all live together, Aunt Roassane?" Florence asked quietly, shocking her foster parents. "I love my new parents, and I love you too, Aunt Roseanne. You are so pretty! Like my mommy! Now that I have you, I will let mommy live with angels. Can we all please live like a BIG happy family?"

Hearing Florence's words brought tears to the elders' eyes, and they all hugged her together, as they stood by Lydia's grave. "We are a family, Florence. Always. I know Lydia would also want this to happen!" Irene assured Florence.

What can we learn from this story?

  • Love has the power to mend even the most wounded hearts. Florence accepted Jake and Irene as her adoptive parents after their tireless efforts to console her broken heart.
  • When you accept a child with all your heart, a child embraces you too. Irene and Jake had accepted Florence as their daughter and wanted Florence to love them as parents. They did their best for her to accept them, and eventually, she did.
