Celebrities' personal lives and struggles usually stay out of the public eye, which sometimes makes people think that being a celebrity is all about glitz and glamour. However, that is a narrative Gomez is actively trying to break, and her upcoming documentary, "My Mind and Me," will highlight some of her problems.

Selena Gomez has had quite a successful career in the entertainment industry, where she is involved in multiple roles. She has been appearing on Television since she was ten years old and has not looked back ever since, going on to record hit songs and star in top movies, including the "Hotel Transylvania" movie series.

Selena Gomez Had a Kidney Transplant Due to Her Lupus

About ten years ago, Selena Gomez was diagnosed with Lupus. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to produce autoantibodies that damage organs and tissues in the body. One of the major organs affected by this is the kidneys; hence, in Selena's case, she ultimately had to have a kidney transplant.

Selena had been warned that she might need a transplant one day, but she had not understood the magnitude of that diagnosis. Nevertheless, she had her transplant around the same time she withdrew from public events in 2017. She was fortunate to receive a kidney from her close friend, actress Francia Raisa.

The number of celebrities who have been speaking up about their experiences with bipolar disorder has been rising over the years.

Selena Gomez Has Been Diagnosed With Bipolar Disorder

Selena Gomez has also suffered from mental health issues and started seeking treatment as far back as 2014 after the lupus diagnosis. Although some people speculated that she was in rehab for substance abuse, she refuted those claims and said that was not a part of her lifestyle.

One of the ways Gomez treated her mental struggles was to stay off social media and the internet. At one time, she was the most followed person on Instagram, and although her social media accounts are still active, she has not been the one doing the posting. This way, she can refrain from seeing depressing things online.

The singer was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2018. When the discovery was made, she felt relieved as she finally understood why she experienced certain things. Knowing that there is a problem and what the problem is can help people overcome issues, and that has been Gomez's way of helping herself.

Celebrities With The Same Condition

The number of celebrities speaking up about their experiences with bipolar disorder has been rising. Many have now become more aware of the mental health condition that causes people to have sharp mood swings, including depression, and this has helped to de-stigmatize it.

Kanye West is one of the high-profile individuals with bipolar disorder and has talked about it in some of his songs and interviews. Mariah Carey's discovery that she had the condition also helped her deal with it as she sought treatment afterward. She was able to identify what could trigger her episodes and stay away from them.

Despite all her challenges, Selena Gomez managed to survive and is working on helping others go through their difficult moments. She feels that her openness about those experiences will also help other people. In addition, her support for the Lupus Research Alliance shows her commitment to fighting the disease.

After overcoming her difficulties, the singer said, "My lupus, my kidney transplant, chemotherapy, having a mental illness, going through very public heartbreaks—these were all things that honestly should have taken me down." But her desire to help people has kept her going and made her a stronger person.
