Two-time Olympian Johnny Weir married his boyfriend, Victor Voronov, in 2011, the same year he confirmed his sexuality after years of speculation. Still, their union faced problems amid allegations of abuse and it took less than half a decade before they called it quits.

Before his coming out, there had been rumors about his sexuality, as some people already thought he was gay. When confirming his sexuality, the figure skater also pointed out that he had taken his time to validate the rumors because he always felt that it was clear that he was gay and did have to come out.

A few months after he broke the news, he married Voronov. During their time as a married couple, they experienced various problems, including a case of domestic battery. They separated in 2014 and divorced the following year.

What happened between Johnny Weir and Victor Voronov?

The couple had been secretly in love before Johnny Weir made the announcement. When their wedding took place on December 30, 2011, Victor Voronov had still not come out as gay; hence, it was a massive step for him. Both sets of parents were on hand to witness their kids exchange their vows.

The couple initially had a drama-free marriage, but all hell broke loose in 2014. It started in January of that year when Voronov made a police report claiming that he had been bitten by his partner in a sad domestic violence case. However, at their court appearance, Voronov decided to drop the charges. Weir said:

"I mean, we're both constantly trying to fight to wear the pants in the relationship. It's constant fireworks. It's very boom, boom, boom."

Johnny Weir and Victor Voronov's Separation and Divorce

After the charges had been dropped and all forgiven, the couple reconciled. Still, the reconciliation did not bring lasting peace, as a few weeks later, Weir announced his separation from Voronov. He tweeted:

"It is with great sadness that I announce that my husband and I are no longer together. My heart hurts, and I wish him well."

The drama heated up after that announcement as Weir revealed that Voronov had been mentally and physically abusive during their relationship. On the other hand, Voronov seemed surprised by the divorce and later sued his estranged husband for defamation.

Johnny Weir's Ex-Husband Victor Voronov

Victor Voronov maintained a relatively low profile after the divorce, which is understandable since he was not a public figure. He had begun dating German ice dancer Joti Polizoakis who is 20 years his junior. The two had met at the airport in Atlanta in 2014.

During his new relationship, Voronov made headlines again in 2016 when he was quoted accusing his ex-husband, Johnny Weir, of trying to disrupt his relationship with Polizoakis. He stated:

“The only thing that Johnny has is jealousy, anger and resentment toward this — trying to break up my relationship.”

Johnny Weir's Family

Johnny Weir's parents, Patti and John Weir recognized his talents at an early age and ensured he would get the best resources to their abilities to reach his full potential. They relocated to Delaware, where there was access to a skating rink and coaches.

Johnny did not dive straight into skating full-time but also had horse riding sessions to help him understand his body better. He started skating at 12 years old. He eventually became a full-time figure skater after he dropped out of college to pursue that dream.

His parents stood by him when he dropped out of college and did the same when he told them about his sexual orientation. In his memoir called "Welcome to My World," he attributed his success to the support they gave him throughout his life.

Despite having a wonderful family and extraordinary support, Johnny Weir has not been lucky in his love life. There has been no talk of him getting into another relationship since his split from Voronov, despite his ex-husband having already remarried a year after their divorce.
