At 17, Halsey, who always felt like a misfit at school and home, tried to take her own life. The attempt failed, and her parents sent her to a psychiatric hospital for two and a half weeks when she confided in them.
Only after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the facility did the teen learn that her mother suffered from the same condition. During her mother's manic episodes, she fed her children ice cream for dinner.
The singer uses her music as therapy and does not want to be seen as a messed-up martyr. She aims to produce music that does not just make others feel better about themselves; she wants the music to help her feel "normal" as well.
